What's In A Name?

Are names really important?

1. Often we'll read or see long genealogies in the bible and gloss over them or skip them entirely

2. Today does the meaning of name always reflect that person character or attitude? No. (IE brad means broad meadow)

3. In Ancient times, people names did have an important, though sometimes subtle, clue about their nature.

4. Do names have importance to God? Yes and No. No, in that a name doesn't totally define a man, but yes, in that by naming something does some value, power, and authority get tied into it?

5. In the Beginning of Gen, we see God the Father excising to 2 aspects of paternal authority, which were creator and author. He made the universe and everything in it and then gave it a name (except the animals). Just as today, this tradition continues, parents make a child, and then when it’s born they name it.

6. In Genesis 2:19-20, We see God, sharing this authority with his newest and greatest creation: man, which he called Adam. He then invites Adam, this unique creature, made in the image of God to share in the divine process to give names to the animals and other living creature, who though made by God, lacked the spirit (breathe nooma/ruha), God had only put it into Adam. Furthermore when God makes Adam a helper, it is he who names her 'woman' (G 2:23) and again after the fall, Adam specifically names her "Eve" G 3:20. Later on though, we see Eve partaking in this naming process. She names her 3 sons (Cain, Abel, Seth)

7. Going back to what's in a name, For the ancients again names where small clues about the person or some circumstance surrounding that person life.

Bible is chalk full of Examples:

Cain- bring forth- first time a human was ever brought forth in the "conventional" way

Abel- means temporary- he didn't last very long did he.?

-Abraham- father of many nations (how many nations trace back to him today)

- Jacob- grasp the heal or deceiver, he was both in his story

-Ruth - friend, -Noami- delight, Maria-bitter, 2 sons Mahlon, "sick" Chilion, "weakening" Boaz str in him

-Moses - to draw forth - Who drew Israel out of bondage?

-Emmanuel- God with us, That was literal wasnt it..lol

Classic Gospel example of Names Meaning:

Adam -Man

Seth - Appointed

Enosh -Mortal

Kenan Sorrow;

Mahalalel The Blessed God

Jared -Shall come down

Enoch- Teaching

Methuselah -His death shall bring

Lamech -The Despairing

Noah -Rest, or comfort.

(Side note of Methuselah (his death shall bring) died the same year of the flood

The first 10 name genealogy in the Bible gives us a code, which summarizes the gospel

Man appointed mortal sorrow, the Blessed God shall come down preaching his death shall being the despairing comfort.

7. Adam was the first man, and gave the animals names and his wife and by extension his family and got the process started, and here we are 1000s of years later we still walk in the precedent he got from God by again, naming those which were are responsible for namely our children. However Adam is not the only 'man'. The Bible calls Christ the 2nd Adam, and this Adam comes to finish and repair the work of the 1st Adam who allowed sin and death to enter the world (Romans 5).

8. The interesting thing is that is that this new Adam , Jesus also had a habit of giving new names to things. The classic example being Simon to Peter. However, the Bible tells us that those who are saved and in the Lord will one day not only get a new Body (1 cor 15), but a new name (rev 2:15).

9. I can't help but wonder if the Lambs Book of life (rev 20), which has the names of all the righteous written in it, has our earthly name, or perhaps our heavenly names, maybe both...who knows..its only conjectures, but it is interesting to think about.

10. What is really important is that right now God has given us a name. When Moses said to God, who shall I say sent me, in other words what is your name God so i can tell those guys what God to praise or be anger at. God response was not a noun like we'd would expected, My name is "Baal" "Zesus" "Apollo" "Isis" etc.... God answer was a verb: "To be" or "I Am" or Yahweh or I AM what I AM . However you phrase it. When God did that world, the world changed forever, ripples were started. 1400 years later, the World changed again with even bigger ripples were made. When God himself put on a robe of humanity and paid the price for our sins on a cross. That time he gave us a new name to be saved (and it was a noun..yay) This name literally means to save. That name was Jesus Christ, and as Peter declared: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other NAME given under heaven by which we must be saved.” So will your trust in that Name today, so you can have yourself a New Name, a better Name, one that is forever...

Best Obituary Ever..

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense , who has been with us for many years.No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;

- Why the early bird gets the worm;

- Life isn't always fair;

- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Faith and Truth , by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his sons Trust and Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

With October around the corner, I realized it’s been nearly seven years since the Lord called me His own. I wasn’t looking for him, but he found me anyways. As I reflect on the radical changes that have come about in my life since that faithful decision, I mirth at all the ways He has used one as unusual as I. He saved me once, he saves me still…

My Testimony (abridged version)

On Thursday, October 16, 2003, my eternal destiny and earthly purpose would change this night after a class with only one sincere question and one simple prayer in ways I am only now beginning to understand. When at 9:25pm that evening, I was standing at the bottom steps of the Student Union building of my University with two seemingly mundane choices before me. The first was to go outside to my car, drive 5 minute to my apartment, and sleep. The second was to walk up those set of stairs as I had done a few times before to an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship function, which had already ended but people still love to hang around and talk afterward.

Like a fool arguing aloud with myself about what I should do, go home or visit; a little voice inside me said “just go up what do you have to lose”. So I did. Once there I started talking with a really good friend named Tim, who asked me in the sincerest tone I have heard in my life, “Brad, what is keeping you from having a personal relationship with Christ?” Dumbstruck by this sincerity in voice, and not wanting to give a cheap answer, I thought about it silently to myself for many moments and then quietly replied more so to answer myself, then Tim, I said …”nothing”. So I went into another room and with Tim’s help, I prayed and accepted Christ.

Later, I got home at 11pm-ish, after having spent a few hours more talking with Tim, as I settled in for the night, I turned on the news to hear about a report of a car accident right beside my apartment, in fact the very intersection I just drove through moments before, one which had no debris or road flares or anything to suggest that an accident had happened recently. The next morning as I read the paper looking for more info about this wreck, I found an article that said the time of the accident was 9:30pm. As I stated before, it takes me 5 minutes to drive home and at 9:25 I looked at my watch deciding to go up those stairs and have life and soul forever changed, as my jaw dropped in disbelief, that same small voice I heard before, spoke to me again saying “I saved you twice last night, once from the accident as well as eternally. Brad, I am real, and I love you”.

Jesus is real and he does love you, so much that he died to save you, even when you weren't looking or asking to be saved. So, I ask you just as sincerely as it was asked of me, What is keeping YOU from having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ today?

How do we identify counterfeits? We Identify something false by putting it next to the truth. CS Lewis said, we know a crooked line by a straight line.

Thus, as is pertains to God. What is Truth according to the Bible.

Sometimes recognizing fakes is EASY...

Other times its Harder Unless someone shows you..

Again we Identify fakes by the standard of the Original. So how has Satan tried to ID theft God? The Bible actually give several examples.

The Character of God and the Copy

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. ~ Isaiah 40:28

They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. ~ Romans 1:25

Satan =

Conclusion God is Creator and Satan wants to be "like the Most High". However Satan CAN'T create nor can man. ONLY God can create. To make something from nothing; only God can do that. Satan, angels, and Men can copy, manipulate, modify, change existing materials, but no one but God can Truly Create Something from nothing.

Jesus vs the Antichrist. Remember the word "Anti" doesnt not always mean against or opposed to something. The word can also mean "like", a substitute for, in place of. So the Antichrist isnt just someone who is apparently and oppositional opposed to Christ, but rather is like him, pretending or masquerading as him. That is how the Bible portrays him as false would-be savior, not an obvious big bad evil hell-bent on global rule or destruction.

Conclusions:

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders ~ 2 Thess. 2:9

If we know the Truth and are familiar with it, just like the dollars, we'll be able to easily identify the fakes. So let us press into our mighty Creator God Jesus Christ.

After Reading Paul letter to Galatians one can see the problems of what happens when a false gospel sneaks into the community. In Gal 1:6-12. Paul lays certain contrasts and facts about both kinds of Gospels:

Quick Bios of some of the Counterfeits we'll be looking at:

Jehovah's Witnesses (or Watch Tower)- Founded in 1879 by C.T. Russell for the original purposes of preparing people for the coming of Christ, the Kingdom and end of the world.

Mormonism (or Latter Day Saints)- Founded in the 1830s by Joseph Smith and later Brigham Young, for the purpose of revealing the existence of an ancient record containing the fullness of the Gospel of Christ that had been written on 2 gold tablets and revealed to Smith by the “angel” Moroni.

Christian Science (Church of Christ, Science)- Founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 for the purposes of providing healing, without medicine, by using Jesus’ teaching, prayer, and faith.

Who is Jesus Christ?

Biblical Gospel:

Jesus is the King, Lord, and Messiah (Christ). He is the First and the Last. He is the Only Begotten Son of God, the Radiance of God’s Glory, the Exact Representation of His Being, the Image of the Invisible God, the Word, and the Word was God. The Word became Flesh and dwelt among us. From the patriarchs is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised Amen.

(John 3:16, Rev 22:13, 1 Tim 6:15, Heb 1:3, Col 1:15, John 1:1,15, Rom 9:5)

Jehovah's Witnesses: Jesus was the 1st creation, Before and After the 1st Coming he was Michael the Archangel. He was sinless and virgin born, but human only, became Christ at his Baptism. (http://www.religionfacts.com/jehovahs_witnesses/beliefs.htm)

Mormonism: Jesus is the son of God, but Jesus was the firstborn spirit child of many other spirit children. Lucifer was also as a son. Both contended for the privilege of taking a body of flesh in order to become the redeemer. (Doctrine &Covenant 93:21, Book Moses 4:1-4)

Christ was begotten by an immortal father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal father." (Mormon Doctrine p.547)

The Issues of Sin and Evil in the World
Biblical Gospel:

God said, "Cursed is the ground because of you [Adam]. Creation groans because its subjected to the bondage of decay and sin. Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin. One day, Jesus will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

Jehovah's Witnesses: The disobedience of the first couple caused death to enter the world, and as a result, all human beings get sick, age, and die. This is against God's plan, which was to make the entire Earth a paradise. ("What is God's Purpose for the Earth?” www.watchtower.org)

Mormonism: Adam/Eve became mortal—just as we are—subject to sin, disease, all types of suffering, and ultimately death. But it wasn’t all bad because they could now feel great joy. “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” If they hadn’t eaten the fruit, Mankind never would have been born or the world populated. Christian Science: Baker said “Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, or thing, but simply a belief, an illusion of the material sense.” (pg. 71, Science and Health with Keys to the Scriptures)

State of Humanity
Biblical Gospel:

Jesus said, “out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.” There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. Evil desires give birth to sin, sin when matured gives birth to death. The wages of sin is death. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Jehovah's Witnesses: Do not emphasize the spiritual consequences of Adam's sin on humanity nor they teach that human free will has been damaged. Rather, they expect members to strive to do God's will and remain pure in his eyes. (“God’s Servants must be Clean.” www.watchtower.org)

Mormonism: Adam’s sin had no impact on man’s ability to choose, people have complete free will to choose good or evil, to follow God or not. Christian Science: Man is sick, sinful, and dying and in need of divine healing. This sin-sickness, however, is in the mind, and not material. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual. (S&H 468, http://www.religioustolerance.org/cr_sci.htm)

Crucified, Dead, Raised, and Ascension

Biblical Gospel:

They put Jesus to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. He didn’t let his Holy One see decay. God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen by…us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. When God raised Jesus from the dead, he seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.

(Acts 2:30; Acts 10:30, Eph 1:21)

Jehovah's Witnesses: Jesus was crucified on a stake, not a cross. While dead God destroyed his physical body. When he returned to heaven, he didn’t receive all power and authority until 1914. ("Who is Jesus Christ?“ www.watchtower.org)

Mormonism: Jesus died on a cross and rose 3 days later, ascended to heaven, but later returned to earth, this time coming to the Americas to preach the Gospel to the Indians, who were decedents of the Israelites. ("Who is Jesus Christ?" Mormon.org. Book of Mormon).

Christian Science: acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter. (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures p. 496)

Salvation: The Atonement of Sin
Biblical Gospel:

You have been set free from sin, because he knew no sin became sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. He reconciled all things to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. This Priest offered for all time one sacrifice for sins. “It is Finished!” Now we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works. The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Rom 6:18, 2 Cor 5:21, Col 1:20, Heb 10:12, John 19:30, Rom 5:1, Eph 2:8, Rom 6:23b)

Jehovah's Witnesses: Christ's death covers the sin of Adam. But eternal life comes not simply from faith in Jesus but from "learning about Jehovah and obeying his requirements," proving oneself to be God's loyal subject, and listening to the Kingdom message and acting on it. Mormonism: Jesus paid for sins on the cross, but some sins were not atoned for, and can only be atoned for by your own blood only (Journal of Discourses: Vol 4. p.53)

"One of the most pernicious doctrines ever advocated by man, is the doctrine of 'justification by faith alone”(Joseph F. Smith, pg. 192 of The Restoration of All Things)

“One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan...that man is saved alone by the grace of God; that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation.“ (Spencer W. Kimball, pg 206, Faith and Works).

Christian Science: Salvation is achieved through progressive spiritual understanding. A person is not saved from hell – but from his or her belief in materiality; sin, sickness and death are destroyed(Science and Health, 593:20-22.)

Afterlife: (Judgment/Heaven/Hell)
Biblical Gospel:

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. They will have to give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's only begotten Son. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt.

(Heb 4:13, 1 Peter 4:5, John 3:18, Dan 12:3)

Jehovah's Witnesses: Dead are raised and judged, with one last chance to gain eternal life. There is no Hell, the wicked are annihilated. 144,000 of JW will rule in Heaven with Jesus, and the other righteous will go to a restored paradise (Eden) on Earth. ("Beliefs: God, Man, and the Future” Watchtower, July 15, 2002.)

Mormonism: Final Judgment all stand before God, Jesus, and Joseph Smith to give an account. Unrighteous who were previously in hell, get 1 last chance to repent, or face eternal damnation. Righteous go to Heaven and those took part in a special sealing ritual on earth get be come to gods too. ("What is heaven like?“"Death is another beginning”."What does the Church teach about hell?" Christian Science: There is No Final Judgment. Heaven and Hell are a state of mind. Each must choose their own path. (http://christianscience.com/questions/questions-christian-science-faq/)

My Personal Conclusions:

The Jw are nothing but False Prophets and have Failed Predictions: Examples:

1874- Coming of Christ

1878- Resurrection of Dead

1881- Time of the Gentiles was fulfilled

1914- Armageddon

1918- Christendom would be destroyed

1925- Est. of the Kingdom

1975- End of the World

Joseph Smith, Young, and other founders were either deceived spiritually or were just complete fakes who wanted to satisfy their sexual lusts; or both.

Smith: “. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet . . . " (History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 408-409).

Young: “And he that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but is Antichrist," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 9, p. 312).

Christian Science is a "Doctrine of Demons” posing as New Age Gnosticism using Christian Themes

•Threefold nature of God, defining it as a trinity of "Life, Truth, and Love," or "God the Father-Mother, Christ the spiritual idea of sonship, and divine Science or the Holy Comforter" (Science and Health 331:26-332:3).

•Creation is entirely spiritual and perfect and matter does not exist. Sin, sickness and death also do not exist; we only think they do. (Science and Health, 472:27-29).

So what does the Bible say about Jesus: Who is Jesus Christ?

Jesus is the King, Lord, and Messiah (Christ). He is the First and the Last. He is the Only Begotten Son of God, the Radiance of God’s Glory, the Exact Representation of His Being, the Image of the Invisible God, the Word, and the Word was God. The Word became Flesh and dwelt among us. From the patriarchs is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised Amen.
(John 3:16, Rev 22:13, 1 Tim 6:15, Heb 1:3, Col 1:15, John 1:1,15, Rom 9:5)

So, if that is our measuring stick, by contrast, lets start by looking at what distortions have the world made about the character or nature of Christ? In others words......

Who do people say I am?

v He wasn’t a son; God has no sons

v He didn’t become Christ until his baptism

v He was highly evolved and enlightened

v He was a good moral teacher

v He was a philosopher

v He was a political activist

v He was a victim

v He was a rebel

v He was community organizer

v He was a miracle-working mystic

v He was a fraud and liar

v He was an insane lunatic

v He was demonic

v He was angelic

v He was Elijah or another prophet

v He was an alien (new age)

Those who don't know the Voice of the King...

Some Jewish men started going around trying to force out evil spirits by using the name of the Lord Jesus. They said to the spirits, "Come out in the name of that same Jesus that Paul preaches about!” Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this, when an evil spirit said to them, "I know Jesus! And I have heard about Paul. But who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and beat them up. They ran out of the house, naked and bruised. ~ Acts 19:13-16

Those who do KNOW the Voice of the King

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.”

The "know" in all 3 of the verses is:

Know: Ginóskó (ghin-oce'-ko): to come to know, learn, understand, recognize, perceive, and feel; have full knowledge and understanding of; Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse between a man and a woman

This is a deep knowing, the highest possible kind of "know". This knowing is so deep that the ancients likened it how a husband knows a wife (ie Adam knew Eve KJV).

This is how God knows us, deeply, personally, intimately. Even the demons know God in a great degree and tremble. The question is do we want to KNOW him like that as well?

So who is this God-man Jesus, so paradoxical, a union of contrast.

He was the meekest and lowliest of all the sons of men. Yet, he spoke of coming on the clouds of heaven with the glory of God. He was so austere that evil spirits and demons cried out in terror at His coming. Yet He was so genial and winsome and approachable that the children loved to play with Him, and the little ones nestled in His arms. His presence at the innocent cheer of a village wedding was like the presence of sunshine. No-one was half so compassionate to sinners. Yet no-one ever spoke such red-hot scorching words about sin. A bruised reed He would not break, His whole life was love. Yet, on one occasion He demanded of the Pharisees how they ever expected to escape the damnation of hell. He was a dreamer of dreams and a seer of visions. Yet for sheer stark realism He has all of our self-styled realists soundly beaten. He was the servant of all, washing the disciples’ feet. Yet, masterfully He strode into the temple and the hucksters and the money changers fell over one another to get away from the mad rush and the fire they saw blazing in His eyes. He saved others. Yet at the last, Himself, He did not save. There is nothing in history like the union of contrast which confronts us in the gospels. The mystery of Jesus is the mystery of Divine Personality.

After he died, June 2003, many of his personal items were handled out to the family. Among them was his Bible, which was given to my dad, and he then in turn passed on to me, after I asked him for it about 3 or 4 years ago. At the time, I looked through it and saw his writing and notes, but didn’t think much of them, I just wanted something personal to remember him by. However, the other night about 2am, I was started thinking about him and the Bible, and pulled it out of the wrapping I keep it in, since it’s so fragile. Some of it is illegible do to wear and tear or moisture, or are just incomplete thoughts he had written, I think as reminders. Nonetheless, many of his words in the Bible are notes from sermons, small prayers, personal thoughts, and other misc writings. So, I thought it be best to get as many of them written down digitally for a record of posterity as well as to give folks insight into the heart of my grandfather and his faith in Jesus Christ.

(As near as I’ve been able to piece together, most of these writings and thoughts were jotted down in the 70s and early 80s. In addition, I’ve tried to quote his words verbatim mistakes, cross outs, rewrites, and all.)

A simple question, but probably the most important one a person can answer in their lifetime. For from the answer of this question, one's whole life's philosophy, lifestyle,and world-view flow from the realms of philosophical or theological theory into practical application of living everyday life.

Pilate's famous question, "What is truth?"

The Bible gives 3 definition of what is truth.

1. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,And Your law is Truth. ~Psalm 119:142

2. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is Truth. ~John 17:17

3. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the Truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." ~John 14:6

Recap, what then does the Bible say: The Law, The Word, and Jesus is Truth.

So, as Jesus said in the same conversation with Pilate's question, "you are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." (john 18:37).

My Life after South Korea

Well, it’s been over a month a now since I’ve been home from Korea and re-adjusting to American life has been easy and challenging in various ways. It’s never easy to leave your life for year and then try to pick it up again in the same manner as before. Because I am glad to say I am not the same as before. I’ve grown, changed, and developed deeper outlook on things since my travels around Asia these past 52 weeks, which is normal with global travel I’d say.

Moving on to other topics, I’ve got my apt here on State Street in Erie as well as my 2000 Toyota Corolla. I started working on my Masters in Education from Liberty University Online while in Korea. Since back, there were a few classes I could not do online and got to go Lynchburg, Virginia to take them. While there, I had a chance to go visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and Patrick Henry’s Estate, which is pretty cool.

I have my Praxis tests for teaching at the end of July, and if all goes well I hope to start student teaching in the Spring in graduate by like May, which would be nice since Ash and I are getting married that following August. Speaking of which, that is our next big task this summer starting the wedding plans. yay! :-/ (So much work for one day; shame most people don’t put half the time and effort into their marriage that they put into wedding day.)

That’s pretty much my life in a nutshell right now: learning, teaching, wedding planning, and ash… “ashing”..lol

My King was born King. The Bible says He's a Seven Way King. He's the King of the Jews - that's an Ethnic King. He's the King of Israel - that's a National King. He's the King of righteousness. He's the King of the ages. He's the King of Heaven. He's the King of glory. He's the King of kings and He is the Lord of lords. Now that's my King.

Well, I wonder if you know Him. Do you know Him? Don't try to mislead me. Do you know my King? David said the Heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork. My King is the only one of whom there are no means of measure that can define His limitless love. No far seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of the shore of His supplies. No barriers can hinder Him from pouring out His blessing.

He's enduringly strong. He's entirely sincere. He's eternally steadfast. He's immortally graceful. He's imperially powerful. He's impartially merciful. That's my King. He's God's Son. He's the sinner's saviour. He's the centerpiece of civilization. He stands alone in Himself. He's honest. He's unique. He's unparalleled. He's unprecedented. He's supreme. He's pre-eminent. He's the grandest idea in literature. He's the highest personality in philosophy. He's the supreme problem in higher criticism. He's the fundamental doctrine of historic theology. He's the carnal necessity of spiritual religion. That's my King.

He's the miracle of the age. He's the superlative of everything good that you choose to call Him. He's the only one able to supply all our needs simultaneously. He supplies strength for the weak. He's available for the tempted and the tried. He sympathizes and He saves. He's the Almighty God who guides and keeps all his people. He heals the sick. He cleanses the lepers. He forgives sinners. He discharged debtors. He delivers the captives. He defends the feeble. He blesses the young. He serves the unfortunate. He regards the aged. He rewards the diligent and He beautifies the meek. That's my King.

Do you know Him? Well, my King is a King of knowledge. He's the wellspring of wisdom. He's the doorway of deliverance. He's the pathway of peace. He's the roadway of righteousness. He's the highway of holiness. He's the gateway of glory. He's the master of the mighty. He's the captain of the conquerors. He's the head of the heroes. He's the leader of the legislatures. He's the overseer of the overcomers. He's the governor of governors. He's the prince of princes. He's the King of kings and He's the Lord of lords. That's my King.

His office is manifold. His promise is sure. His light is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting. His love never changes. His Word is enough. His grace is sufficient. His reign is righteous. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. I wish I could describe Him to you . . . but He's indescribable. That's my King. He's incomprehensible, He's invincible, and He is irresistible.

I'm coming to tell you this, that the heavens of heavens can't contain Him, let alone some man explain Him. You can't get Him out of your mind. You can't get Him off of your hands. You can't outlive Him and you can't live without Him. The Pharisees couldn't stand Him, but they found out they couldn't stop Him. Pilate couldn't find any fault in Him. The witnesses couldn't get their testimonies to agree about Him. Herod couldn't kill Him. Death couldn't handle Him and the grave couldn't hold Him. That's my King.

He always has been and He always will be. I'm talking about the fact that He had no predecessor and He'll have no successor. There's nobody before Him and there'll be nobody after Him. You can't impeach Him and He's not going to resign. That's my King! That's my King!

Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Well, all the power belongs to my King. We're around here talking about black power and white power and green power, but in the end all that matters is God's power. Thine is the power. Yeah. And the glory. We try to get prestige and honor and glory for ourselves, but the glory is all His. Yes. Thine is the Kingdom and the power and glory, forever and ever and ever and ever. How long is that? Forever and ever and ever and ever. . . And when you get through with all of the ever's, then . . .Amen!

Psalm 22 and Jesus' Last Words

So many know that Psalm 22 is a highly prophetic little song. many believe because it is so vivid and powerful that this Psalm could have been what Christ was thinking while crucified. I have taken it one further and have inserted where the last saying of Jesus would have fit. normally we think before speak. Well, i think it speaks for it self.

Jesus’ Thought: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. ~Psalm 22:1-2

I am not really try to imply anything, and plenty of people before
and after me have already made this comparison, I just happen to enjoy the photos of the two "empires" and how history repeats itself. As the verse goes: Nothing new under the sun.

Also mind that the EU growing is a bit outdated, as several Eastern European countries, including Turkey, have been approved for EU candidacy or potential candidacy. So in reality, its only a matter of time, a few years really, before the EU looks more like it does blow, when these new counties join. This map seem familiar!?

God's working in my life: A Record (Part A)

In recent days, I have been reading Genesis, particularly enjoying Joseph, but I’ve been about all the extraordinary ways that God answered the man’s prayers, and how even the things done against him that his own brothers met for evil, God used for good. As I begin to mediate on this Scripture, God showed me many things, one most important thing was he reminded of all the ways he has manifested himself in my life, both in big and smalls ways, some subtle and some as gentle whispers.
As such, I taken upon myself to make an account of all the amazing ways God has answered my prayers, or just shown up in my life in just clear and powerful ways. If for no other reason that my own posterity and the Glory of our Creator I present such account. These won’t be detailed of all the facts, but have enough context to convey the excellence of God. So here are a few examples I know of, about how God has Provided.

On October 16, 2003, my heavenly eternal destiny and earthly purpose changed one night after a class. When at 9:25pm Thursday night when given the choice between 2 pathways, one leading outside to my car and a 5 minute drive to my house and the other up a set of stairs to an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship Meeting that had ended but where people love to hang around and talk. Like a fool arguing aloud with myself at this pathway about to go home or visit; a little voice inside my head said “just go up what do you have to lose”. So I did. Once there a friend named Tim Perkins, says in the most sincere voice I have heard before “what is keeping you from a personal relationship with Christ?” Not wanting to give a halfway answer, I replied after several moments of thought…”nothing”. So I went and accepted Christ with Tim’s help. Later, I got home at 11pm to turn on the news with report of a car accident right beside my home, in fact the very intersection I just drove through. The next morning as I read the paper looking for info about the wreck, the time of the accident was 9:30. As I said, it takes me 5 minutes to drive home and at 9:25 I looked at my watch deciding to go up those stairs and have life and soul forever changed, as my jaw dropped, that same voice I heard before spoke to me again saying “I saved you twice last night Brad, I am real, and I love you”.

A side from my testimony God has revealed himself to me in other situations in the past 7 years. Besides providing me to the funds for 6 years of college, bills, and other expenses, including $2000 worth of mission trip the Dominican Republic; for which I had no parental help, mostly just me and God, 2 examples of his financial provision stands out in my mind more clearly than all others. Once at IVCF conference in Pittsburgh in 2006, before I left I found I had accidently overdrawn my account by like 1 dollar, which meant that recent checks I had just wrote were going to bounce, resulting in hundreds of dollars worth of bounced checks and over drafted charges. I was utterly sick to my stomach about how I could let this happen and had no clue about how I was going to pay it all, since I had no job at the time. So that night, the conference had a retreat of silence I went back to room, and poured out my heart and tears to God, asking for help, he lead me to Eph 3:20, which says God do immeasurable more than we could ask or imagine. The next morning as I called bank computer over the phone, to check the dmg, the computer voice said +300.00 dollars, again my jaw dropped. I was speechless. I hung up and called back and put all the info again just to make sure I did it right the 1st time. Sure enough, she said the same amount. I started to cry again, my tears of sorrow became a weep for joy. Later, I found that Penn State had acquired another scholarship for me, of which I knew nothing about at all until the money has shown up. Praise be to God.

The 2nd example, as I said I went to the DR a few times, one of times I went I had problem raising the funds about 3 days before I was suppose to leave I was still about ½ short on the required funds. That night for my Quiet time I was reading John 11, where Jesus, tells mary and Martha that he is the resurrection and that if they believe, they will live, “then he says do you believe this?” That caught my attention as the Spirit asked me “brad, do you believe this? That I can provide for you?” I said “Lord, I want to and do, show me, help me please” with that I fell asleep. The next day I went to the mailbox, and sure enough a check from a friend for the amount I needed. Again God came through for me. That night as I finished John 11 for my QT, I read verse 40, which says “Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" With that I cried again and gave him the glory. Also, as I am writing this I recalled a 3rd time, God came through for me, the 1st time I left for the DR, the night I left, I checked the atm I had like an extra 200 dollars in my account, I didn’t know why, when I looked online my IRS tax refund had come in about 2 weeks ahead of time. As with Abraham, My God is Jehovah-Jireh.
A few cool ways that God has provided for me is by having the right people show up along my path when I need them the most. Suddenly they are just there and it goes beyond a fluke or chance. Once i got dropped off at a diner coming back from Christian Retreat in Michigan (CFW). Anyhow, my dad was suppose to pick me up at such and such a time and place, but due to communication error and no cell phone, he never came. I waited for an hour. Deciding I would walk to my grandma’s house which is all I could think of, since she was like 5 miles away. So I started walking with Luggage toward her house. As I walking down the road like a homeless man, I prayed “Lord, please provide me someone that I know to drive by and give me a ride, please..” and before I could even finish my prayer, a pickup truck slows down beside me and parks off to the side, and sure enough my cousin jumps out offering me a ride…That’s my King!

Another cool prophecy that Jesus was and is the Messiah.

Anyone who as taken the time to go through their Old Testament will and probably has seen the dozens and dozens of Messianic prophecies, and in the NT how Jesus fulfilled them. As one pastor has proclaimed "the NT is the OT concealed and the OT is the NT revealed.Anyhow, recently I discovered a prophecy i had never understood until now, which is just utterly fascinating as a believer and Historian.

In Genesis 49:10, Jacob prophesizing over his 12 sons before he dies, says to his son, Judah "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people".

(Let us remember that Judah is the line of the kings David. Also, in a few verses before that Jacob even says that Judah will rule his brothers.)

So, the King and "scepter" from the verse represents his right to rule, administer justice, carry out the Law, and punishments, etc...all the power of King. The king had given the daily administration of the country and part of his authority in such manners to the Sanhedrin and experts of Moses' laws, hence the "lawgivers" serving at the king's feet idea.

Also, most of the ancient Rabbis viewed the part about "until Shiloh comes" to mean the Messiah. There are many reasons they believed this, but the point is they did believe it to messianic. In modern language, I think we could understand this prophecy as "when the kingdom of Judah finally loses it's sovereignty as a nation to make and enforce its own laws, the Messiah will appear and draw the people toward himself". Now of course Judah the nation has been destroyed and rebuilt a few times, but when it did exist it was always allowed to carry out the law's Moses had given, even when they were ruled by Alexander and the Greeks.

However by 6-7 A.D. the tension between Rome and the Jewish leadership had come to a head. Rome crushed the Jewish revolts. Archelaus, the king of the Jews was dethroned and banished. Coponius was appointed Roman Procurator. Moreover, Sanhedrin lost their ability to administer its authority, especially crushing was the ability to carry our capitol punishment on lawbreaker. When the Jewish leaders realized that indeed the "scepter" had departed from them, many put on sackcloth and ashes weeping, and thinking that word of God had been broken, as Judah's sovereignty was gone, but the Messiah had not yet come; or so they thought.

One Rabbi Rachmon observed at that time: "When the members of the Sanhedrin found themselves deprived of their right over life and death, a general consternation took hold of them; they covered their heads and their bodies with sackcloth, exclaiming, 'Woe unto us, for the sceptre has departed from Judah and the Messiah has not come.'"

Little did they know the Word of God had not been broken, but rather a few miles north of Jerusalem in hills Galilee, a small ~10 year old boy was in his father's shop learning to make new thing and fix the broken, who in a few more decades would come calling, his name: Yeshua Ha-Mashiach.

The Word of God was not broken, for the Word himself had come down and was dwelling amidst us, furthermore, "The Word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty,but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." ~ Isaiah 55:11

He was the meekest and lowliest of all the sons of men. Yet, he spoke of coming on the clouds of heaven with the glory of God. He was so austere that evil spirits and demons cried out in terror at His coming. Yet He was so genial and winsome and approachable that the children loved to play with Him, and the little ones nestled in His arms. His presence at the innocent gaiety of a village wedding was like the presence of sunshine.

Halloween Nostalgia

The Leaves are changing colors, the air is cool and crisp, but fairly warm, and the daylight is growing shorter. An otherwise normal early September in Erie, PA; so what is so strange? Well for one it’s now November and this is Geochang, not Erie. Am I complaining about 65-75 degree temps in the day and 50s at night, by no means. Yet, as I was riding my bike to a party tonight the crisp feeling of the air against my skin, the smell of the leaves, It left me with a feeling nostalgia I would have felt about 2 months ago, if I were in Erie right now. So really I am neither gloating nor complaining about my situation. I merely am commenting on the reality of my nostalgia.
Many of the Korean adults could care less about Halloween; it is a not national holiday here. The kids like it, they don’t understand the costumes or “trick or treat” all they know or care about is that people give them candy for free. Not that American kids are really any different. However, this Halloween has been different for me, not because of candy, costumes, or pumpkins or stuff like that, but because i think being gone for so long i miss the most subtle things of nature..i really don't know its nearly 3am, so i am probably ranting a bit. Simply put, i think i am missing home and can't wait till December.

Grad Paper 1: A Father's Influence on his Children

My first real major grad paper: on fathers of all things: Enjoy if you get a chance to get read it and let me know what you all think.

Seventeenth century Welsh poet, George Herbert once said that “one father is more than a hundred schoolmasters” (Ruud, 2009). Hebert seemed to have an understanding about fathers and their impact on a child's academic and personal success that modern scholars and researchers are only recently beginning to fully appreciate. As most research now shows that fathers who are involved with their children's schooling, and life as a whole, tend to be better off than those children without them.
This paper will look at some of this research and will focus specifically on the roles fathers play in the academic success, emotional and biological maturing, and personal character they contribute to their children lives. Also, by looking at three key stages of development, the first years, the elementary years, and the teenage years, paying particular attention to both genders during this time of adolescence, this paper shall attempt to ascertain what impact the father really has. Then, compare those statistics to those of children who grew up without a father's impact on their life, in order to get a full understanding and appreciation as to how much of a difference one father can make. Lastly, answer the question what can a community do to fill the void of those children who are missing a father figure in their life. In order to get a full appreciation of the dynamic differences that a father can make this paper will look at what scholarly research, contemporary culture, biblical authority, and the author's experiences have to say on the subject of what role a good father can have.

First, whenever the word father is used throughout this text it can be referring not to just a man who is a biological parent of the offspring, but it can also be someone who is unrelated to the child, but demonstrates fatherly qualities, or in other words, a father-figure. So, an adult male in a child's life that is caring and involved as well as respected by that child as a good role model; a dad. Thus, both the former and latter is what will be meant when the word father is used in the text. Such examples of other father-figures include: an uncle, grandfather, brother, neighbor, family friend, church member, teacher, and step-dad to name just a few. Second, I want to qualify this paper by saying that all fathers are human and thus prone to error. No father is perfect and often can mess up, act to strongly or weak in matters, and make wrong decisions. As such, this paper is not intended to show the perfectness of fatherhood, but in a general way demonstrate the positive effect a father can have in a child's life in the overall sense of it.

From the very earliest stages of a child's development the father has an important role to play that if missed can be detrimental to the child's later stages of growth. According to researchers, men's early parenting should include spending time “in activities such as playing with and reading to the child as well as less time-based forms of early parenting such as expressions of affection toward the child” (McBride, Dyer, Liu, Brown, & Hong, 2009). When fathers engaged their children during these early years by playing games and showing them nurturing affections in that play, a give and take quality occurs between parent and child, which are vital to the future growth of that child's emotional and cognitive development. In families, where fathers are often present and directly involved in that family in positive ways, the children grow positively themselves (Eirini & Buchanan, 2004).

It is this author's opinion; many fathers sincerely want to provide for their children, but the traditional approach of working excessively longer hours in order to provide more materially for their family has come with one massive consequence. Often, nothing captures social woes better than music, and this consequence is no exception. In the song, American Dream, the singer tells of a father that works so much that he's missing out on what really matters in life; his family. The lyrics declare: “So he works all day and tries to sleep at night. He says things will get better; better in time…Daddy, can you come to my game...Not this time son I've no time to waste. Maybe tomorrow we'll have time to play…Another wasted weekend and they are slipping away” (Hall, 2003). These lyrics are poignant of the fact that a father being with his son is more important than all the work in the world, and to that end, the song ends with the singer repeating over and over into a fade “All they really wanted was You” (Hall, 2003).

Even certain aspects of culture realize the crucial role of the father being present, and the research conducted by Eirini (2004) validates it even more so; fathers must be more personally active in their children's lives. Investing quality time in early stages will save from a lot more work later in the child's development. Thus, those fathers who are involved starting at the child's earliest stage of development will benefit the child more so then their non-father figure counterparts.

By the time a child enters school, and academia becomes the driving force in a child's life, it is the mother who ends up being the primary parent responsible for the education of the child. However, the same study shows that when a child begins struggling at school that it is namely their father they go to for help. “The current findings suggest that fathers may be playing an additive role when their children are struggling academically and they become engaged in their children's schooling” (McBride et al., 2009). Why is this? Perhaps one needs only to consider some of the traditional stereotypical roles of fathers, such as problem solver, provider, and preparer. As is often the case, the funny thing about most stereotypes is that they are often rooted in truth.

According to a study conducted at the University of Florida, fathers tend to identify themselves in certain ways, and three of those are as a problem solver, provider, and preparer. The first is that many fathers do not fully appreciate how important the role of problem solver during these early years can be for a child. Whether in making the big family decisions like starting a new career, or in the small ones like deciding to take their daughter shopping or son to a ball game, children spend their early adolescence watching their father make numerous decisions. As such, “are modeling effective problem-solving skills for their child” and are showing their children “how to make and act on decisions, as well as experience the consequences of their actions and decisions” (Evans & Fogarty, 2005). Contrast this to a child who is not raised with such an example to model after, will often become unsuccessful and highly dependent on others when faced with difficult circumstances. When the father models proper problem solving strategies they are not only helping their children in the immediate, but also the future by fostering a “child's responsibility, independence, and self-reliance” (Evans & Fogarty, 2005).

Next, as providers, fathers having been sharing the load quite heavily with mothers in recent decades, as a dual income has become necessary to keep up the standard of living in America. Also, other factors like high divorce rates or a dad pursuing his higher education beyond his undergrad to name a few examples, have left many fathers no longer considered the main breadwinner of the family anymore. However that does not mean that fathers are completely free of the responsibility, as society, and men themselves, still judge their success as fathers by how well they provide for their families. Even, social policies, such as alimony and child support after parents' divorce reflect that men have a duty to provide materially for their children (Evans & Fogarty, 2005).

“More than the provision of material things (e.g., income and resources) for children and families, a father's provider role can be defined in terms of responsibility for care of the child” (Evans & Fogarty, 2005). Fathers who find themselves held prisoner by their jobs lose sight of the bigger picture, which is that children also need to be provided with time, attention, and affection. Once men begin to realize what truly defines them as fatherly providers is not just quantity of materials, but the quality of love, they will begin to find personal completeness as men and fathers. When children see that their fathers provide dynamically for them, their responses tend to be one of confidence in their fathers, and as such, know they can come to him for an assortment of issues and help (Evans & Fogarty, 2005). Children lacking a father, or a father who is a good father-figure, are at significant disadvantage in this sense, as many probably will be left with a strong sense of hunger inside as they had no “true” provider to feed them; a least that was the case for this author. Again, as was previously summarize, some aspects of culture recognize this fact already, hence, the song lyrics' conclusion “all they really wanted was You” (Hall, 2003).

Lastly, in their role of preparer, a father must realize that they “don't need to wait until their children are becoming adults in order to teach them important life lessons” (Evans & Fogarty, 2005). Often, Fathers will pass along their family values, morals, and even religious beliefs, if any, to their children. This preparation and guidance by the paternal parent will have ripples that extend in all areas of a child's world, such as school, work, and life in general. “Fathers can provide moral guidance and practical lessons all the way through their child's life,” which in turn can be used as a model for that child when they become a parent, particularly for sons when they become fathers themselves (Evans & Fogarty, 2005). Fathers may not always know what is best, but they can pass along what they do know to their children from adolescence and into their adult lives, in addition, they can listen to what their young children are saying. Thus, children, again particularly boys, without a fatherly figure miss out getting potentially useful preparation for school life, work life, and nearly every facet of life, including parenthood.

All three of these examples given are jobs that a mother can be and do for her child as well, yet that is not the point, but rather it is that these are roles that fathers indentify and even define themselves as parents (Evans & Fogarty, 2005). As such, most children recognize that fact about their fathers growing up and that is why dad is more often than mom the “go to GUY” for help. Children, most of the time, are not always directly taught this, but rather observe it and pick up on in their daily living with their own families. Also, it goes back to the younger stages of childhood development, when a small child develops that mindset that their father is someone who is approachable and personal, which was the point of the earlier games and nurturing affections to build that special bond for later development.
So in many ways it does make reasonable sense that if a father has been in attendance and positively active in their child's life from the cradle to the present that, of course, the child would probably want to seek out his help over moms when they are struggling with schools. After all, he has been there to fill the role of problem solver, provider, and preparer before, more so than mom, why would now be any different. Contrast this to a child that has no father-figure to help them when school gets tough. Of course, the mother can fill the role, but there is something different about it when it is coming from a masculine persona, and that something makes a significant difference for children who have a father's guidance as to those who do not.

By the time a child has reach his or her teenager years, the positive presence of a father, or the lack there of, will have had an indelible influence in the lives on the child's life. Moreover, a father does not just pass on his DNA onto his children, but as stated before, he passes on his morality, values, beliefs, and, in many aspects, his identity as a parent. In earlier stages of development children tend to need the same kinds of affection and degrees of attention regardless of gender (of course exceptions exist). However as teenagers, given various societal and peer pressures, fathers need to be more attentive to the different needs of both genders. For example, a teenage son that has a father active in his life is far less likely to have problems with the law. In addition, that son tends to be more well-rounded with their emotions and feelings, in other words, not overly aggressive or exceedingly sensitive (Finello, 2009). A father teaches his teenage son limits, right and wrong, consequences of one's actions and how to be comfortable being a man. A male teenager without a father-figure tends to operate without such limits or balance, and struggle to come to grips with a healthy male identity.

Daughters can benefit from a father's affection as well right from the start of their teenage years. According to a study at Vanderbilt University, “girls who had close, positive relationships with their fathers during the first five years of life tended to reach puberty later than girls who had more distant relationships with their fathers” (Finello, 2009). The researchers from Vanderbilt University further explained in the journal ScienceDaily that the girls who entered puberty later in their teenage years all had fathers will similar characteristics. These dads all demonstrated quality involvement with their daughters, were active care-givers, and had a supportive positive relationship with their wives. Furthermore, their study showed that “girls raised in father-absent homes or dysfunctional father-present homes experienced relatively early pubertal timing” (Vanderbilt University 1999). What is the reason for this time difference and what is its implication?

Another possible explanation given from a biological prospective by the researchers is that daughters, who are raised around other men not their real father (step-dad or mom's boyfriend) are exposed to “pheromones produced by unrelated adult males” and this in turn “accelerates female pubertal development” (Vanderbilt University 1999). So, if a girl is constantly exposed to her biological father's pheromones, which would occur if the two are continuously engaging in a healthy father-daughter relationship over several years, then it seems this exposure to his pheromones is not a catalyst, but an inhibitor to her puberty. Perhaps its serves as a “natural incest avoidance mechanism” they suggested (Vanderbilt University 1999).

Also, even if a girl does live with her father, but has not spent much time or has had little interactions with him over the years is not exposed his pheromones; it would explain why daughters of neglectful fathers also reach puberty at an earlier stage as well (Vanderbilt University 1999). In addition, other researchers have concluded that teenage girls with positively active fathers are less to develop mental health problems later as adults. “Genuine praise and admiration from a father can help his daughter grow up to be an independent, confident woman” (Finello, 2009).
One fascinating implication of this research seems to be that as teenagers, boys need a male role-model to help keep them in check and set a positive example about what it takes to be a good man in spite of the social and peer pressures to the contrary. However, it does not have to be the boy's biological father; nearly any male role-model that has made a positive connection to the teenager seems to make the difference. Contrast this with teen daughters who seem to need their biological fathers from the earliest stages of their life, no substitutes, a least to the extent they “needing them” in the understanding that it means certain implications about their biological development. Having a girl go through puberty a few years early or later, may not mean much in the bigger picture of what a positive father can mean in his daughters life. However, when a daughter does have her father she generally has more confidence and sense of self-worth than those girls who don't have their fathers, and that certainly carries a lot of weight for a healthy father-daughter relationship.

As far as the numbers are concerned, according to research conducted by Getting Men Involved: The Newsletter of the Bay Area Male Involvement Network (1997), children that grow up with poor or no father-figure make up 71% of all high school dropouts (Krohn, 2001). In addition, 63% of youth suicides, 90% of all runaway children, 85% of all youths in prisons, and 75% of all adolescents' drug abusers are children who grew up in fatherless home (Krohn, 2001). If these stats were not enough to demonstrate the need for fatherly men, then consider another study that says:
Women whose parents separated between birth and six years old experienced twice the risk of early menstruation, more than four times the risk of early sexual intercourse, and two and a half times higher risk of early pregnancy when compared to women in intact families. The longer a woman lived with both parents, the lower her risk of early reproductive development. Women who experienced three or more changes in her family environment exhibited similar risks but were five times more likely to have an early pregnancy (Quinlan, 2003).

So with these stats and information showing the deep need for children to have positive father figures in their lives, what communities do to help provide fill this void where there are no dads? The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, or some mentoring program like it, certainly is one intervention program that communities could put into place. Many children in low income neighborhoods, with no father-figures to speak of, are riddled with high crime rates, drugs, and many school drop outs. These children had no dads to help them when school got tough, so they just gave up, or they had no fathers to show them limits, morals, or the consequences of their actions.

These kids need a better example and shown that something better does exist and they too have a chance to get it. Big Brother is all about getting kids to stop looking towards drugs and violence for answers and toward academics instead, as is certainly the goal of any decent intervention program. According to some research, when this organization starts mentoring the youth of these low-come neighborhoods with proper role models, the children become “46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs” and “52% less likely to skip school” (Tierney, Grossman, Resch, 1995). Also, the children become “more confident in their schoolwork performance” as well (Tierney et al., 1995). So, having a mentoring program like this one in communities that so desperately need father figures will certainly make a difference in the lives of those children living there.

Without a doubt both sons and daughters need a father just as much as they need anything or anyone else; perhaps even more so for some. Being a father is never an easy job, thus, dads should remember some very timeless wisdom held in Scriptures that speaks to them about raising children. First, it reminds father their not alone, and their Heavenly Father is with them, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9 NIV). Also, it reminds fathers not to exasperate their children, “Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged” (Colossians 3:21 NIV). Rather, it teaches, Fathers should be lifting them up, encouraging them, and disciplining them when necessary, in other words, they are keeping their children on the correct path. Thus, a good father according to the Bible will “train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6 NIV).

As has been demonstrated, fathers are vital in all stages of their children's development; from birth to death a father's value in his child's life is incalculable. Everything from school struggles to moral values as well as drug use to sexual maturity, these and so many other aspects of children's lives are rooted in their father. Without fathers impacting these aspects, the results are often destructive and terrible in that fatherless child's life. Also, as has been shown, both sons and daughters each have their own unique dependences of their father based on their respective genders. Fathers teach and give their children so much; Herbert was correct “one father is more than a hundred schoolmasters” (Ruud, 2009).

Political Realism and Humanitarian Intervention in Africa

Few things are as controversial in politics these days as nations, particularly the U.S., declaring that they have the right to violate the sovereignty of a potential enemy people, when their own national security is at risk. Another divisive issue in many political arenas of the West is how to address the political chaos and gross human rights violations that plague many different nations in Africa. As many of these nations are former-colonies to those Western powers, some sense of obligation still exists to help fix the many different problems plaguing Africa. The United Nations has taken several steps over the years to foster these fledging democracies that are still in travail and has provided much humanitarian intervention to help them address numerous social injustices.

Other than its involvement through the UN, how has the U.S. addressed these problems in Africa? What US policies are in place to deal with these 3rd world issues, and how are these policies implemented? Also, and possibly most important of all, what are the motivations behind these policies? Is it just for national security and special interests, or do social or moral concerns also factor into U.S. policymaking? As such, the current US policy in dealing with Africa according to the State Department Director of the Office of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Claudia Anyaso, is that “In Africa, our policies are straight forward (1) to support political freedom and democracy (2) to expand economic opportunities and growth (3) to fight infectious diseases, (4) to end wars and combat terror and violence, and (5) to increase mutual understanding through cultural and educational exchanges.”

This paper will adopt four African nations, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Darfur (Sudan), as case studies, and will from the presuppositions based on the theory of political realism, run these four case studies through two different hypotheses. By looking at policies, past actions and relations between these four nations and the U.S., as well as how they measure up against the two hypotheses, some measure of understanding will emerge to see if the U.S. is only motivated by self-interests when it comes to humanitarianism. Or it will show that there could be some moral factors that are present in their policies that go beyond just the self-interests of the United States.

The first hypothesis states: does the U.S. intervene in the affairs of other nations for the purpose of national security, and conversely will the U.S. not intervene if there is no security risk to itself or its interests. The second hypothesis by with the four case studies will be tested against states: does the U.S. consider the morality of humanitarianism when factoring in the decision to intervene, particularly when it in includes human rights.

In order to create the most accurate test, a clear understanding of what is meant by humanitarian intervention and political realism is in order. For the purposes of this paper, humanitarian intervention will be defined by the description given by Professor of International Relations at Cambridge University, James Mayall, which is: “the coercive (military) interference in the internal affairs of a state with the purpose of addressing massive human rights violations or relieving widespread human suffering.” Also, given the many subtle nuances to political realism, for the purposes of this paper, this theory can best be understood as being that each nation-state is “operating on the basis of self-help and survivability.” Therefore, “selfishness is a virtue than vice; national interests are of the most vital consideration in deliberating the state’s policies.” Or to put it another way, political realism is a theory, which assumes that all men are “inherently evil, selfish, and power-hungry,” thus, all nation-states are motivated by these interests, and that any implemented policy will be manifested from these self-interests.
With those definitions in mind, the first of the four case studies, Liberia, can be placed through the two hypotheses. The United States and Liberia have always shared in a unique history and special relationship with one another. Originally, Liberia was one of the few areas in Africa that had not been colonized by European powers. So, in 1819, Congress appropriated one hundred thousands dollars for the American Colonization Society (ACS) to begin the establishment of Liberia, which means "land of the free," in order to serve as a place of refuge for freed slaves and non-slave African Americans who wanted to go back to Africa. The first group of 86 settlers arrived and “established a settlement in Christopolis (now Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe) on February 6, 1820.” Thousands of freed slaves would immigrate over the next few decades to Liberia, until finally on July 26, 1847, these Americo-Liberians declared their own independence and the Republic of Liberia was born. The U.S. officially recognized Liberian independence in 1862.

The ACS members that were most responsible for the establishment of Liberia were namely Quakers who “felt that African Americans would have a much better chance at liberty in a country of their own than they would in America.” Also, many slaveholders were all for sending free African Americans and freed slaves to Africa. However, their motivations had little to do with religious or moral values, but rather they were driven by their own self-interests and prejudices, because “they wanted to rid America of any free Blacks who might help organize a slave rebellion.” Though, Liberia was free of the direct parental control of America, they still relied very heavily on the financial assistance of the U.S. to maintain their economy. As the 20th century began Liberia and the U.S. still had maintained a close relationship, but one that was still dominated by American interests first and Liberian needs second.

During WWI, at the behest of the U.S., Liberia declared war on Germany. In response, the Germans sent some of their U-boats and bombed Monrovia, which crippled not only Liberia’s previous trade agreements with Germany, but the whole Liberian economy as well. Following the war, the U.S., exploiting the devastated Liberian markets, sought to take advantage of Liberia’s abundant natural resource, its rubber. The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Ohio opened negotiations with Liberia for its access to this resource.

The result was an agreement, supported by the U.S. government, that clearly disadvantaged Liberia: Firestone would lease one million acres for 99 years at the annual rate of six cents per acre; any gold, diamonds, or other minerals discovered on the land would belong to Firestone; and Liberia would accept a $5 million loan from Firestone for a 40-year period with which to settle all outstanding foreign loans, in effect taking on new debt to pay off old debt.

Other than just commercial interests, the U.S. would also push its military interests on Liberia during both WWII and the Cold War. In exchange for a more financial aid, The U.S .was able to build military bases in Liberia in the 1940s, which allowed them to maintain continuous air patrols over North Africa and Europe. In 1943, FDR stopped in Liberia to visit U.S. troops. Many Liberians took this visit by the president to demonstrate the close relationship between the two nations and that financial aid would continue, which it did. As the decades progressed and the Cold War took off, America viewed Liberia as the ideal base of operation to “contain” the spread of Communism in Africa. President Kennedy sent the Peace Corps to Liberia to set up economic and military programs to assist Liberia’s government. Liberia, in turn, let the U.S. rent land free of charge, in order to carry out its anti-communist programs. “From 1962 to 1980, Liberia received $280 million in aid from the U.S., the greatest level of U.S. aid to any African country on a per capita basis at the time.”

During the 1960s, Liberian President William V.S. Tubman supported the U.S. on nearly all of its international policies, including Vietnam. However, this U.S. dominated relationship began to fall apart in 1971 when Tubman died. His successor, William R. Tolbert, started to promote Liberian political freedom from America. He broke relations with Israel and welcomed various communist ambassadors from the U.S.S.R., China, and Cuba. Such drastic changes in Liberia’s relations forced President Jimmy Carter to visit Liberia in 1978 to reaffirm the two countries’ unique and close relationship. Perhaps fortunate for American interest, in 1980, indigenous master sergeant Samuel K. Doe led a successful coup to overthrow Tolbert. Doe had Tolbert and his cabinet executed as he assumed control of Liberia. With his indigenous heritage he was well accepted by many Liberians at first. However, as the 1980s advanced his cruelty and oppression of his people grew.

According to one Liberian newspaper, “Liberia received more political and military assistance from the USA in the decade of Doe’s rule than it had ever received, despite an increasingly deteriorating political climate and human rights record.” Doe still enjoyed the support of the U.S. Government, because he capitulated to nearly every U.S. demand in regards to fighting off communism. The Reagan Administration considered fighting the Cold War more important to its own interests than ending Doe’s corrupted regime. In order to stop alleged Soviet influences from growing the U.S. gave nearly $500 million in aid to Liberia, some of which made its way into Doe’s own personal pocket. In order to cover its growing international shame for supporting such a corrupted regime, the U.S. pressured Liberia to hold democratic elections in 1985, which Doe won overwhelmingly. When asked by the U.S. Congress about the fixed presidential election, Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Chester Crocker testified “that the election was imperfect but that at least it was a movement toward democracy”. He further justified his statement with the claim that, “in any case, all African elections were known to be rigged at that time.”

In 1989, as the Cold War between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. was ending, a civil war in Liberia was erupting as rebel leader Charles Taylor was leading his forces into Liberia from the Ivory Coast. Over the next seven years a very bloody civil war raged on in Liberia. Many Liberians were hoping that the U.S. would intervene and pressure Doe to resign his presidency or help to negotiate a peace treaty. The U.S. did nothing of the sorts, but rather regarded the war as an internal problem, and at most recommended that neighboring African nations and intergovernmental organizations should negotiate a peace treaty. America’s hands-off policy toward the war and Doe would allow Taylor to eventually overthrow Doe, and name himself president in 1997.
Under Taylor’s regime the human rights violations and abuses continued in even greater numbers than before, and with the U.S. cutting nearly all of its direct funding for Liberia, the citizens suffered greatly. Liberia’s neighbors also suffered with Taylor in power as he planted seeds of instability in Sierra Leone, which contributed to a civil war in that country as well. In response, the UN placed heavy sanctions against Liberia. The U.S. was hesitant to offer up financial aid to Liberia with Taylor in charge, other than that of aid in the form of “humanitarian services (health care, education, social services),” which were for the Liberian people and not the government.

Following a second civil war in 2003, Taylor was overthrown, and a new democratic government was established. The U.S. restored its friendly relations with Liberia and its first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. After the war, the U.S. “contributed over $750 million in bilateral assistance and more than $750 million in assessed contributions to the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).” Also, in February 2008, President Bush, visited Liberia and met with Sirleaf. Bush promised that the U.S. would continue to assist Liberia in its internal rebuilding through the U.S. Peace Corps and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). “The U.S. Government's development assistance program in Liberia is the second-largest USAID development program in Africa.”

The relationship between Liberia and the U.S. has been a very complex one, but a few consistent threads do emerge when one considers this brief overview of the history between these two nations. When applying the first hypothesis to the case study of Liberia, it is quite clear that the U.S. did intervene in Liberia when it suited its own interests or national security, which keeps in step with the political realist theory. Liberia’s founding suited the interests of the Southern slaveholders, because by having the freed slaves out of the country, there was a less likely chance of them starting a slave rebellion, thus, the Southern way of life could be preserved. The commercial and military interests of America were always pressed on Liberians, in exchange for loans and aid, so as to insure the national security of the U.S. against the Germans and then the Soviets, even at the cost of turning a blind eye to obvious human rights violations by Doe.

Conversely, following the conclusion of the Cold War, the U.S. was no longer pressured to contain Communism in the region, and withdrew much of its direct aid and support for Liberia. The national security of America was no longer perceived by policymakers to be at risk, so the financial aid to Liberia mostly ceased. Thus, the Liberian case study proved the second part of the first hypothesis correct. Even though the U.S. was partially to blame for some problems in Liberia in the 1990s, it still refused to directly intervene in the war. The U.S. had its reasons, and not just due to lack of a direct threat to its own security, but also due to an incident in Somalia in 1993, which will be addressed later in this paper.

As for the second hypothesis, though not nearly as apparent, or a least as beneficial for the Liberian people, the U.S. did to some extent consider the morality of humanitarianism when factoring in the decision to intervene in Liberia in the 1980s with money and military supplies when fighting the Communist threat at the expense of Doe’s abuse of human rights. However, as was suggested prior, the Reagan Administration maintained that the policies of the Cold War took precedent over those of Liberian human rights. Again, the ethics of the situation were considered, just not in the positive aspect as many Liberians or political moralists would have preferred. However, the humanitarian services given to Liberia by the U.S. over the last ten years have helped somewhat to make up for the policy decisions of the 1980s. On the other hand, one may argue that the U.S. is only doing that as a way to help combat terrorism and anti-American sentiment in that region, which would make the current humanitarian outpouring seem less like making amends, and more like a continuation of national security interests. The simple answer is that it is probably a bit of both, given America’s current policy objectives in Africa.

The next case study, Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, was once a British colony until it declared its Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from the United Kingdom on November 11, 1965. The British viewed this act of UDI as illegal, but took no military actions to stop it. Instead they imposed sanctions on their former colony and convinced the UN to do the same. Also, following the UDI, the U.S. recalled many of the government officials, including the Consul General, and ceased all their activities in that country; say for a few staff workers that were still working under the British Crown.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the U.S. supported British policy toward Zimbabwe, until finally in 1976 when America began to move toward bringing about a peace between the U.K. and Zimbabwe. However, America supported an end to the conflict, but by helping to negotiate an “end to the dispute, lent the weight of the United States to the search for a peaceful settlement and were a counterpart to the Soviet-Cuban use of military power to increase their influence in southern Africa.” So by carving out this positive image for itself, the U.S. was able to establish a strong foothold in the region, which enabled them to combat the growing communist threat in Southern Africa.

Following a successful negotiation, on December 10, 1979, the British officially recognized Zimbabwe’s independence and lifted all remaining sanctions, the U.S. followed suit six days later. In early 1980, the ZANU party, under the leadership of Robert Mugabe's won the majority of seats in the elections and formed Zimbabwe's first government. Years of economic sanctions had taken their toll on the nation and the new government had its work cut out for it. They faced an economic crisis and much civil unrest. By 1981, the U.S. “pledged $225 million over a 3-year period toward the government's goals of postwar reconstruction, distribution and development of land, and the development of skilled manpower,” and by 1986, they had “contributed $380 million, the majority in grants, with some loans and loan guarantees” to the African nation.

With a nonaligned foreign policy adopted by Mugabe's, relations between Zimbabwe and the U.S. operated on a limited base. Throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and as recently as this year, Mugabe has won every single election he has held for the country. Claiming overwhelming majorities in the poll results, when only a small percentage of the population actually votes, the elections are neither fair nor sincere. With corruption fluent in his government and clear lack of respect for human rights, the U.S., since 2000, has not only condemned Mugabe’s regime, but has suspended many economic and military aid programs with the country. On the other hand, when it comes to fighting HIV and AIDS, the U.S. still has agencies on the ground in the country to help deal with these deadly epidemics that threaten the health and lives of many in Zimbabwe. “Despite strained political relations, the United States continues as a leading provider of humanitarian assistance to the people of Zimbabwe, providing about $400 million in humanitarian assistance from 2002-2007, most of which was food aid.”

Due to Mugabe’s brutal policies toward his own citizens, poor handling of his country’s internal affairs and his unwillingness to relinquish his political power, the relationship between the U.S. and Zimbabwe has grown exceedingly strained in recent years. In 2005, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that Zimbabwe is on a list called the "outposts of tyranny," which placed it alongside other U.S. enemy nations, such as Iran, North Korea, and Cuba. The White House later defended this placement of Zimbabwe by saying that the Zimbabwean government's "actions and policies pose a continuing unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States.”

Furthermore, President Bush, in that same memo to Congress, said that because of this security threat he would continue “to maintain in force the sanctions to respond to this threat.” On the other hand, Bush stated in November 2008 that even though Mugabe has not resigned his office since the June elections in Zimbabwe, and that his regime continued to “suppress basic human rights” and has denied “citizens access to basic medical services” the U.S. will still offer up aid. “In spite of the regime's aggressive actions against its own people the United States will continue to honor its commitment to provide emergency humanitarian assistance.” He concluded his statement by pointing out that the U.S. has already given $186 million in aid this year alone, and is willing to offer more in the future providing that the country forms a “legitimate government that represents the will of the Zimbabwean people.”
Through the lens of political realism the course of events between Zimbabwe and the U.S. fit well within the measure of the first hypothesis to the extent that in terms of national security and interests the U.S. supported its Cold War ally, Britain, in their policies toward their former colony. However, it was only to the extent that the U.S. was able to still able to be perceived as respectable enough to broker a peace treaty in 1979. With the U.S. gaining influence in Zimbabwe they were able to move their personal agenda of containing Communism wherever it lay in that region of Africa. Conversely, in spite of the U.S. Government publicly condemning Mugabe’s behavior and policies, and even listing him as a threat to U.S. Foreign Policy, the U.S. has taken no direct or indirect military operation to remove him from power.
In terms of the second hypothesis, not too much humanitarian intervention has been conducted in Zimbabwe, prior to this millennium. One of the few positive highlights of the current administration has been its desire to provide humanitarian aid and treatment for HIV/AIDs in Africa. However, considering the current political relations between the two nations getting that assistance to the Zimbabwean people has proven difficult. However, in this situation it does appear that the U.S. has to some extent considered the morality of the issue, and has proceeded to intervene in terms of humanitarian assistance for the Zimbabwean and not for Mugabe’s regime. Mugabe’s human rights violations have not seemed to detract the U.S. from maintaining aspects of its foreign agenda in Africa.

Zimbabwe, in the first hypothesis, is a threat but not to the extent that the U.S. will intervene with force. Also, considering the domestic problems in Zimbabwe: 200 million percent hyper-inflation, the HIV/AIDs epidemic and internal political strife, those are things that the U.S. policymakers feel that this country can not afford to get weighted down with at this time. Secondly, by still offering up humanitarian assistance, in spite of Mugabe, the U.S. not only accomplishes it goals of combating deadly diseases, but one may also argue that the U.S. is also planting seeds of good-will for tomorrow. With the Zimbabwean people having a more pro-American attitude, they would be less likely to support or become terrorists themselves against America, unlike other nations on America’s "outposts of tyranny" list.

For the next case study, Rwanda, there are several additional outside factors that one needs to consider when interpreting America’s foreign policy decisions toward this African nation. Before that a brief historical context is in order to fully appreciate the course of events that occurred in this country in the 1990s. Rwanda, prior to European colonization in the 19th century, was dominated mostly by two indigenous ethnic groups: the Hutu and the Tutsi. The Hutu in spite of being the majority of the population (~85%) were still dominated and ruled over by the minority the Tutsi. The dynamic of these two groups resembled that of Medieval Europe, where the peasant majority (the Hutu) is ruled by the aristocratic minority (the Tutsi). However, by the end of the 19th century, Rwanda had fallen under the control of Germans, who would control the land until 1915, when “Belgian troops from Zaire chased the small number of Germans out of Rwanda and took control of the country.”
Though under Belgium control, the Tutsi still enjoyed a lot of political power over their Hutu neighbors. Even after both World Wars, the League of Nations and UN both had left de facto control of this colony in the hands of the Belgium. Finally, during the 1950s, Belgium began to encourage the establishment of democratic institutions in Rwanda, but these measures were heavily opposed by “Tutsi traditionalists who saw in them a threat to Tutsi rule.” However, the Hutu would have no more of the Tutsi domination, and with the support of the Belgian military, a revolution broke out in the colony in 1959, which resulted in the Tutsi ‘monarchy’ finally being overthrown. Following the revolt, “more than 160,000 Tutsis fled to neighboring countries,” and the Party of the Hutu Emancipation Movement (PARMEHUTU) was born. On July 1, 1962, Rwanda was granted full independence from Belgium, and shortly after that Gregoire Kayibanda, leader of the PARMEHUTU Party, was elected as Rwanda's first president, “leading a one-party government chosen from the membership of the directly elected unicameral National Assembly.”

Kayibanda’s regime, which promoted Hutu-supremacist ideology, was plagued by several internal problems such as “inefficiency and corruption,” and after only a decade of rule, a military coup in July 1973, would leave power in the hands of Major General Juvenal Habyarimana, “who dissolved the National Assembly and the PARMEHUTU Party and abolished all political activity.” In 1975, Habyarimana created the National Revolutionary Movement for Development (MRND), and under a one party state, he established both his and his party’s place of power. The Hutu were more than eager to embrace their new leader, whether out of fear, admiration, or simply because he was the only legal candidate, Rwandans re-elected him again and again throughout the 1970s and 1980s. However, in 1990, Tutsi exiles began to return to Rwanda in the form of a rebel army, and they “forced Hutu President Juvenal Habyarimana into signing an accord which mandated that the Hutus and Tutsis would share power.”
Ethnic tensions between the two groups would continue to swell, even with the arrival of 2500 UN peacekeepers who worked to preserve a temporary cease-fire between the government and the rebel forces. The Hutu were vehemently opposed to ever sharing power again with the Tutsi. Many Hutu extremists were looking for any opportunity they could find to break the truce and kill as many Tutsi as they could; which they got in April 1994.

On April 6, 1994, Rwandan President Habyalimana and Burundi's new President, Cyprien Ntaryamira, were flying back from a peace meeting in Tanzania, when their jet was shot down on final approach to Kigali airport in Rwanda. Both leaders were killed. “Immediately after their deaths, Rwanda plunged into political violence as Hutu extremists began targeting prominent opposition figures who were on their death-lists, including moderate Hutu politicians and Tutsi leaders.” Across the whole country, Hutu military and militia groups “began rounding up and killing all Tutsis and political moderates, regardless of their ethnic background.” The UN peacekeepers, small in numbers, could do little to stop the ensuing rioting and killings, and many of them fear for their own lives. After ten Belgium peacekeepers were captured, tortured, and then killed, America, France, Italy, and others all began evacuating their people out of the country. Little or no effort was made to help Tutsi civilians or Hutu moderates escape the ravages of the Hutu’s wrath.
Over the next few months as the massacre continued, the UN argued about what sort of action should be taken. The U.S. and the UN were very careful not to call the killing genocide, because then they would have been forced to intervene under the mandate of the Genocide Convention of 1948. Following the Holocaust, an UN treaty was created, which stated that genocide was an international crime and that those who signed this treaty were responsible for preventing any acts of genocide and were to punish those who would commit the crime. The treaty defined genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religions group.” This was clearly the case in Rwanda, but the UN Security Council was still divided on the proper course of actions. They eventually sent 5000 troops, but it was not enough to stop the killings. Their failure to act with sufficient force resulted in the deaths of over 800,000 Tutsi civilians and Tutsi sympathizers. From April to July 1994, the world watched and did little while Rwandans killed nearly 10% of their own population. The only thing that ended the genocide was that neighboring countries began military invasions of Rwanda.

The genocide in Rwanda was a point of great contention and grief for the Clinton Administration and the U.S. Foreign Policy. In June that same year, “the Clinton administration instructed United States spokespersons not to describe deaths in Rwanda as genocide,” and not in spite of the 1948 Genocide Convention, but because of it. Since, labeling Rwanda as genocide would then require that the U.S. send forces to a region of the world, in which, American troops and its foreign policy had just recently been in and had met with disastrous results. The area was the country of Somalia.

Following a violent civil war, Somalia found itself in a massive famine, the U.S. working through the UN, created a relief effort of humanitarian intervention on August 15, 1992. Distributing the food and supplies to a tired and frustrated populace was difficult. Many political factions, private armies, and gangs gathered much of the food for themselves, instead of sharing it with the public; they used it as means of influence over the public. The U.S. military created a coalition, called UNOSOM II, and attempted to create a safe zone in the Southern part of the country, free of the violence, in order to better distribute the food to the right people. One of the political factions, under the leadership of Mohamed Farrah Aidid, saw this coalition as a threat to their power, as such; their militia began carrying out assaults on the coalition. In August 1993, a battle broke out between Aidid’s forces and U.S. coalition forces in the city of Mogadishu. By the end of the battle, over 1000 Somalians had been killed along with 18 U.S. soldiers (73 were wounded). The dead soldiers were put on display and dragged through the streets of the city. Clinton ordered the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Somalia.
With such a humanitarian intervention disaster in Somalia still looming on the minds of many U.S. policymakers; their hesitation about sending more forces into another unstable African civil war only a year after Somalia seemed prudent on their part; albeit unfortunate for Rwanda. Justifiable, or not, the U.S. policy not to intervene, and the use of word games as to what should be considered as genocide; left Rwandans unchecked to kill nearly one million of their own people. The difficult tension of the situation was felt even back on Capitol Hill, as one Rep. stated:
There is no question that the United States' policy in Somalia was a disaster. What started as a humanitarian mission became a nation-building experiment and turned into a protracted foreign policy disaster... Regardless of what the Clinton administration says, genocide occurred in Rwanda. Regardless of what the administration says, our policy in Rwanda was a disaster and failed to stem a disaster.

In the years following the genocide, U.S. interests regarding Rwanda have shifted from humanitarian concerns “focusing on stability and security” to humanitarian concerns that foster “strong partnership and sustainable development.” Today the U.S. still provides much foreign assistance in terms of economic and medical programs to aid Rwanda in the rebuilding of their country. Rwanda has slowly began to recover from the genocide, but a lot of work still needs to be done in terms of rebuilding the government as well as dealing with health problems, such as HIV and malaria. It seems the U.S. is currently keeping within their framework toward their overall African policies in Rwanda.

America’s controversial decision not to intervene following the outbreak of violence in Rwanda in 1994 certainly was one made out of the necessity of political realism. In terms of the first hypothesis, the U.S. national security was in no way directly threatened, and the U.S. did not have many political or commercial interests in Rwanda to consider either. Thus, national security or national interests were factors only to the extent that many policymakers wanted to prevent another ‘Somalia incident’ that could claim more American lives. As for the second hypothesis, the morality of humanitarian intervention was heavily considered when the U.S. decided not to intervene, but it, obviously, was not enough to convince America to take any meaningful actions at all.

With the failures of the intervention in Somalia still fresh in their memories, policymakers were hesitant to get involved. This can be seen by the U.S. stalling the UN to take any effective actions in the immediate onset of violence in the summer of 1994. Also, by how Clinton refused to use the word genocide to describe the situation, so that he could avoid having to take any formal action in the region, which happened to be geographically close to Somalia. It is clear that in this situation the U.S. deemed that political factors trumped those of moral responsibility. In America’s attempt to avoid another humanitarian intervention crisis and by extension the lives of U.S. troops, by not getting involved; failed. On the other hand, by not acting, a more serious crisis, genocide, occurred and 800,000 people died. It really was a no-win situation; in addition it was a “sad story and record for the United States, the United Nations, and the world, and most tragically for the lost people of Rwanda.”

The final case study, Darfur, which is a region located on the western boarder of Sudan, has been declared one of the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to international observers and the U.S. State Department.” It was formally declared genocide in July 2004 by the U.S. Congress and addressed as such by the Secretary of State, at the time, Colin Powell. Congress urged Bush to pushed it through the UN under the Genocide Convention of 1948, and seek an UN protection force to send to Sudan. The UN did respond and passed a resolution on July 30, 2004, which threatened to use “sanctions against Sudan if it failed within 30 days to apprehend and prosecute the Janjaweed.” However, before further information about this situation can be considered a better understanding about how the prior course of events and the players behind those events have brought this country into its current crisis needs to be explored.

In terms of demographics, today, the northern areas of Sudan are mostly urban and populated by about 22 million Sudanese, which are mostly Arab and are Muslim in background. As opposed to the rural southern regions, which has a population of about only 6 million whose citizens are mostly black African, and whose beliefs are mostly Christianity and indigenous. As for the history of the nation, up until the 19th century, Sudan was little more than a series of small autonomous kingdoms and principalities that consisted of a plethora of various tribes and ethnic groups. In 1820, Egypt launched a campaign against its southern neighbor and managed to bring many tribes under its fold, thus, unifying much of the northern region of Sudan. Egypt was unable to gain considerable influence in the southern portions of the country. In 1881, a religious zealot claiming to be the Islamic messiah, the Mahdi, took advantage of Egypt’s weakening control of the area to unify the people around himself, and they overthrew the Egyptian officials. In 1898, with the help of the British, the Egyptians retook its former lands in Sudan. From 1898 to1953, both Egypt and Britain jointly administered authority over the Sudanese; however the British provided most of the political policies and the officials to carry them out.
In 1953, British and Egyptian officials concluded an agreement allowing Sudan to become an independent nation, and by January 1, 1956, Sudan was under its own rule. The new constitution was silent on key issues for Southern leaders, such as the implied Islamic dominance of the Northern states in the document, as well as the lack of defining what system of government would be implemented; federal or unitary. This led to a breakdown of the new government and was followed by seventeen years of an off and on again civil war between the North and South in Sudan. Amidst the continuous fighting of the 1950s and 1960s, a series of military and civilian leaders tried to take hold of power, but always to no avail, namely because those who got into power kept pushing a Northern Arab dominated agenda, which only fueled the South’s resistance.

“In May 1969, a group of communist and socialist officers led by Colonel Gaafar Muhammad Nimeiri, seized power.” Not long after coming to power, Nimeiri declared Sudan a socialist state, as opposed to an Islamic state, and he also entered into talks to give the South its autonomy. Taking these steps not only angered all the Muslim parties, but the Soviets who had previous supported Nimeiri withdrew their support once he turned socialist as well, but not before trying to overthrow him, which failed. Having no other powerbase to rely on, Nimeiri sought to win the favor of the Southern regions. In 1972, a peace agreement was reached and the civil war was declared ended with the South being granted its own autonomy.

The peace treaty, called the Addis Ababa Agreement, lacked the support from the powerful Islamic and secular parties in the North. After a series of treaties in that 1970s that accomplished nothing, other than alienate the North’s agenda to advance an Islamic state in Sudan, Nimeiri eventually figured that he needed the support of the North more than the South if he was going to stay in power. In 1983, Nimeiri declared an end to the South’s autonomy; he took control of the South’s army and named Arabic the official language of the whole country. As a result, a second civil war broke out that same year. Nimeiri’s regime was finally overthrown in 1985, by General Suwar al-Dahab, whose first act was to disband all of Nimeiri's government and its policies. Some peace negotiations were held, but nothing concrete was able to be hammered out between the North and South leaders, so the fighting continued.

In 1998, amidst more conflict, an Islamic army faction, led by General Omar al-Bashir toppled the national government and created an Islamic state in Sudan. Throughout the 1990s, this Islamic government alienated not only the South, but also the Western and Eastern portions of Sudan, which were composed of both Muslims and non-Muslims. The Islamic government supported many Muslim extremists and terrorist groups, such as Osama Bin Laden and al Qaida. As Bashir’s regime was supported by many other Muslim nations, likewise, many of Sudan’s neighbor’s Ethiopia, Uganda, etc, supported the rebel forces in the South. By the end of the 1990s, many regional influences were pushing for a peace treaty to the civil war, and by 2001, the U.S. and UN had entered into helping to broker a peace, which has gradually developed through a serious of U.N. resolutions and treaties, and was finally made official in 2005.

The United States and Sudan have had a complex relationship, back during the first civil war, Sudan broken off relations with America in 1967, due to its’ support and involvement for the Arabs side during the Arab-Israeli War. However, after the new Sudan government broke ties with Soviets in 1972, the U.S. was quick to restore relations with Nimeiri, and even offered to help resettled refugees following the end to the war. America did not have any particular interests in the area, beyond the desire to fight the communist threat of the Soviets. Helping Nimeiri seemed to be the best way to carry out this agenda. Other than a few minor issues, the two countries’ relations remained mostly calm throughout the 1970s. However, when the second civil war broke out in the 1980s, relations between the two became quite strained. By 1986, their relationship was completely shattered, when America carried out military actions against one of Sudan’s allies, Libya. As a result, many Libyan terrorists started attacking the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum (Sudan’s capitol) and had managed to kill a few embassy employees in the process.

Prior to this, Sudan received more aid and military assistance than any other sub-Saharan Africa country, but after the attack and the establishment of Bashir’s regime, the U.S. cut off all assistance to the country. With the take over of an Islamic state, which supported known terrorists, such as bin Laden, the U.S. closed its embassy in Khartoum, imposed economic and trade sanctions of the country, and placed Sudan on its list of States that sponsor of terrorism. With international pressure to ends its civil war, Sudan turned to the U.S. for assistance in this matter, which the U.S. agreed to do in exchange for Sudan’s support to fight terrorism in its own boarders and abroad. As the War on Terror escalated in Afghanistan and Iraq, Sudan both publicly supported and condemned U.S. actions in these two countries. As of 2008, Sudan still remains on the U.S. list of states that sponsor terrorism.

As for Darfur, in 2003, following nearly two decades of civil war, the people in that region, who are mainly black African Muslim farmers, grew tired of the government and its’ neglect to help alleviate the problem of poverty and famine in the area. Frustrated and out of options, two rebel factions arose out of Darfur against Bashir’s regime. Under the guise of putting down the insurrection, the Sudan government not only crushed the rebellions, but proceeded to make an example of the people of Darfur. With the support of the government a local Darfurian Arab tribe formed a militia, called the Janjaweed, who have since proceeded to burn Darfur’s farms, conduct raids, destroy villages, rape, pillage, and kill many civilians in Darfur. By 2004, 400,000 Darfurians were believed to have been killed in mass genocide by the Janjaweed, and millions more have fled to neighboring countries to avoid the violence.

As mentioned earlier, following the news of the situation, both Congress and President Bush quickly identified the situation as genocide along with the UN. Since then there has been a huge international movement to help Darfur refugees as well as to put pressure on Bashir to end the violence and help his fellow Sudanese. The U.S. has taken the same steps to help the people and pressure Bashir. However, such pressures did not hinder Bashir from supporting, or stopping, further violence actions against the peoples of Darfur. In May 2007, because Bashir had not kept any of the UN resolutions he had previously agreed to, President Bush announced that he was going impose stronger sanctions. In addition, he said, the “Treasury Department will add 30 companies owned or controlled by the Government of Sudan to its list of Specially Designated Nationals.” This in essence forbids these companies from the U.S. market and makes it illegal for any “American companies and individuals to knowingly do business with them.”

Many officials hoped that with new imposed sanctions, the U.S., with the help of the UN and African Union will be able to “prohibit Sudan's Government from conducting any offensive military flights over Darfur” as well as “strengthen the international community's ability to monitor and report any violations.” The U.S. policy has been “pushing for full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,” which ended the civil war back in 2005, as well as “the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement signed between the Government of Sudan and some Darfur movements in May 2006.” Together, the two treaties have provided the bases for the U.S. policy goals for the “development of a peaceful, unified, and democratic Sudan.”
As for the humanitarian invention dimension of Darfur, as of April 2008, there were over “20,000 military personnel and more than 6,000 police will form the core of the force, whose mission is to protect civilians and humanitarian workers and to ensure peace and security” in Darfur. Furthermore, the U.S. policy in Darfur seems to be one that is proactively cooperating with the UN and AF and shares in their goals to end the genocide. In addition, the humanitarian aid the U.S. has given to Darfur is immense, which as of 2008, America has provided “over $4 billion in humanitarian assistance” as well as “40,000 metric tons of food aid monthly” to the war ravage regions of Sudan.

With respects to the first hypothesis, when one considers all that has happened in Darfur in terms of the genocide and the U.S.’ reaction, certain interests have to be considered. Since, Sudan is on America’s list of states known to have sponsor terrorists, such as Osama bin Laden, it certainly in the interest of the U.S. national security to intervene in the affairs of Sudan, in order to prevent, any further support for terrorist activities from the realist prospective. These factors were most likely considered when U.S. policymakers were so quick to declare Darfur genocide in 2004, in addition to the factors pertaining to the humanitarian crisis. One might consider that under the veil of humanitarian intervention, the U.S. has been able to advance its own goals of fighting terrorism in Sudan. With its sanctions on Sudan, America has not only been able stop further genocide from occurring, but also conduct measures in the region to fight terrorism that it might not have been able to do without the humanitarian crisis needs as a cover.

As for the second hypothesis, the U.S. did consider the morality of the situation in Darfur, and has taken steps of intervention to end the genocide along with the help of the international community. However, one thing that the current administration has made it appoint to voice, as opposed to the Clinton Administration, and that is to call the situation in Darfur genocide. One may content that part of the reason why the U.S. and the international community was eager to send peacekeeping forces, stems from both their failures to stop the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Darfur could be seen as their chance to make up for past mistakes. However, despite their better response than in Rwanda, the fact remains that 400,000 souls have been murdered in Darfur. The actions taken by the U.S. and the UN have certainly though kept that number from growing any further in recent years, and thanks to the 20,000+ troops, billions of dollars, and the huge amount of food supplies, the situation is better than what it was only a few years ago.

In conclusion, it has been demonstrated that in each of the four African case studies, though certain circumstances may vary over time and location, the evidence, however, remains the same in that U.S. foreign policymaking in matter of humanitarian intervention is heavily influenced by America’s national security and interests. Looking at the history, policies, past actions, and current relations between these four nations and the U.S. has demonstrated that fact. Whether Cold War policies or the War on Terror, America has generally put its own interests over those of the nation in which it is intervening in, or not intervening as in the case of Rwanda. Even in situations of obvious human rights violations by corrupted 3rd world governments, America tends to place its needs first, as all nations tend to do, which keeps in step with the theory of political realism.

Although factors of national security and interest are primary when determining foreign policy, they are however not the only factors. Secondary concerns of morality, human rights, and peace are all present in people when they determine what authoritative values their nation will adopt in matters of domestic and foreign policy. True these values are generally trumped by whatever national interests are paramount at any given time, or are often used as a smokescreen to carry out other more selfish objectives. However, the fact that these ideals continue to be apart of American society and serve as frameworks for many of its’ overarching foreign policies, such as those in Africa. As the Founding Fathers wrote: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity.” These are the opening words of Charles Dickens’ immortal work, A Tale of Two Cities, which he used to describe some of the more turbulent times of the early modern era. The late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century experienced some of the most amazing and drastic changes in politics, society, and every day life that a person could ever want. It was full of extremes and dualities as Dickens’ quote would suggest. Both the American and French Revolutions were the fuel for this era’s storm of changes. As the only two democracies of that time, both of these countries’ destinies seemed intertwined to one another.

These two sister republics started off as close war allies, but would soon find themselves on a path that might have lead them to an all out war. In spite of their common beliefs and enemy--Great Britain, these two allies had their share of tensions and miscommunications; none of these incidents being as influential or damaging to Franco-American Relations as the infamous XYZ Affair. Thus, in what manner did the French respond to the Anglo-American neutral shipping treaty? Why did they respond in that manner? What compelled the French foreign minster and his agents to press the U.S. Diplomats so hard for bribe? Also, to what extent did the XYZ Affair have on the U.S. foreign policy toward France? These questions as well as the reactions of President Adams, Congress, and the American people to the XYZ Affair all play a key role in understanding this dynamic part of history.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress endorsed Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, whereby the thirteen colonies effectively and officially declared their freedom from Great Britain after nearly one hundred and fifty years of English rule. The reasons for these drastic political actions are many, but needless to say, the British Crown was not about to give up its most financially valuable colony without a fight. The war for revolution and independence was afoot.

The British military, with its powerful warships and seemingly endless sea of red mass, which composed of well-trained and armed soldiers, struck fear into the hearts of her enemies during any battle campaign. Given their lack of weapons, supplies, and military experience, American leaders knew if they were going to have any chance of succeeding in defeating this military superpower, they would have to enlist the aid of other European nations, most notably France. In order to negotiate agreements with these nations in a way that would be beneficial to both parities, John Adams, at Congress’s request, created the Model Treaty. This treaty was a template document that setup various provisions for trade agreements and neutral rights with America and other foreign countries. Congress approved Adams’ treaty on September 26, 1776. In December of that same year, Adams, Ben Franklin, and few others arrived in France with a copy of the Model Treaty in hand, in order to negotiate a formal military alliance against Great Britain.

Even with his charismatic demeanor and Adams’ intellectual support, Franklin had a hard time convincing French Foreign Minister, Charles Gravier, the Comte de Vergennes, who was assigned by the French Government, to negotiate with the Americans to support the United States with war against England. There was certainly no love-lost between France and Britain. Both had been at odds with each other for generations; fighting wars for survival as well as imperial conquest. One of the more recent and notable wars, The French and Indian War, had left France humiliated and without colonies in North America, and she was looking for a chance to get back at England. However, France’s problem was that she was still broken and exhausted from so many wars, the thought of investing more French money and lives in yet another war would be hard for the government to sell to the restless nobility and officials. Basically, America had to prove to Vergennes they could defeat Britain in battle as well as have the resolve to see the war all the way through, then France would help them help them win the war.

It would be nearly another ten months, but on October 17, 1777, American troops manage to defeat British forces, in a decisive victory, at the Battle of Saratoga. Winning this battle demonstrated that America could perhaps defeat the British and were not a lost cause after all. Thus, in February 1778, Franklin and Vergennes signed two agreements. The first was a treaty of amity and commerce, based after the Model Treaty, which defined what was considered contraband, in addition to defining the neutral trade rights for both parties. The second, and more important, was an Alliance Pact, in which both agreed never to make peace or any other agreements with England without consent from the other first.

With the arrival of fresh French troops and supplies, the tide of the American Revolution was slowly, but surely, changing in favor of the Colonists. By 1781, American and French forces had the British on the ropes. By September of that year, America had trapped British General Cornwallis at a fort in Yorktown. At the Battle of Chesapeake, French warships successfully managed to stop British supplies ships from reinforcing Cornwallis. That following October, Cornwallis officially surrendered at Yorktown, which is when many historians consider the final major battle of the Revolutionary War. The official end of the war came on September 3, 1783, after the signing of the Treaty of Paris by the Americans and British.
The Americans had let the proverbial cork out of the bottle in terms of revolutions, because now it was France’s turn. As America was struggling to adopt an effective form of government to lift them out of the difficulties of the post-revolution, on the other side of the Atlantic, France had been dealing with troubles of its own. Having fought so many wars with England, along with recent American Revolution, the French coffers were empty. The French monarch, King Louis XVI, tried imposing heavy taxes on the nobility and peasants alike, in order to bring France out of a depression. However, with heavy taxes, inflation, famine, and supply shortages, the people could no longer take it and they began to revolt against the French Crown. On July 14, 1789, hungry and frustrated citizens stormed the Bastille in Paris, marking the beginning of the French Revolution.

The king and his family fled the city, but eventually were forced back to the palace as a mob escorted them there by force and placed them under proverbial house arrest. Louis tried to exert control once more, but it proved to be unsuccessful. He was put on trial for his crimes in December 1792 and was beheaded by the guillotine the following month, thus ending the Absolute Monarchy in France.

In 1793, as France was seized with internal anarchy in a gruesome period called the Reign of Terror, thousands of people were being murdered or executed for no reason. The French Revolution was out of control. Both out of fear of a revolution happening in their own countries as well as for a chance to take advantage of France’s internal discord, many European nations joined together, in what would be known as the First Coalition, and attacked France. These nations included: Spain, England, Prussia, Austria, Ottomans, and a few Italian States. Most stopped fighting after a few years, except for England; these two would wage war on and off again until 1802.

With the continuous conflict between France and England, neutrality was hard to maintain for Americans, as some wanted to help France, to return the favor from the American Revolution. Still others wanted to support England, because it was still America’s main trading partner and financial supporter. President George Washington felt that taking any side and getting dragged into a foreign war would be detrimental to this infant nation as she still had many domestic problems to address before dealing with other nations problems. So, in April 1793, Washington declared the Proclamation of Neutrality, which stated that America would not directly get involved in Europe’s wars. In it he said that in the “interest of the United States require, that they should with sincerity and good faith adopt and pursue a conduct friendly and impartial toward the belligerent Powers (France, England, Austria, Prussia, etc..).”
Though Washington had pacified the debate for now, he still had woes to deal with because of Europe, particularly England. Since the Treaty of Paris, in 1783, British ships had been seizing American vessels, showing little respect for the new nation’s sovereignty, but because of the war with France, British assaults on U.S. trade ships had increased to intolerable levels. British forces had seized nearly 250 American trade ships bound for the foreign ports. England would take the trade ships cargo and men to use in its war with France. In response to increased attack on America ships, Congress enacted a 60 day embargo on all U.S. shipping bound for foreign nations (particularly England).

Seeking a more permanent solution to this problem, Washington sent John Jay to London to negotiate some kind of peace, establish stronger neutral trade rights, and get a few other pieces of land Britain was still holding onto in North America. After many concessions on both sides an agreement was made. It was called the Jay Treaty and was signed on Nov. 19, 1794. Due to her lingering war with France, England capitulated too many of the American’s demands, which was fortunate for the U.S., because England’s view of America was one of condescension. In spite of this, Americans were still angered over the treaty and at John Jay, because nothing about the previous attacks of American ships by the British was ever really addressed. Washington had a hard time selling the treaty to Congress and the people, but finally, in June 1795, the treaty was endorsed by Congress. It was the lowest point of his career.

The Jay Treaty was only meant to resolve growing tensions among England and the U.S., but France viewed the treaty as nothing less than an Anglo-America alliance pact. For France, this was a direct violation of the 1778 Treaty Alliance that America and France had signed, which said neither could enter into an agreement or alliance with Britain without of the other’s approval. So feeling the Americans had broken their side of the deal, France ended their side too, thus, voiding all American neutral trade rights in French controlled territories.

Now tensions between France and U.S. had been growing for many years, and this only served to add more fuel to fire. In August 1796, Washington recalled Foreign Minster to France, Jams Monroe, back home as tensions between the two had grown even thicker. With France no longer recognizing U.S. neutrality, France was seizing its trade ships left and right. In addition, on March 4, 1797, John Adams took office as the second president of the United States; inheriting both the presidency and the war-like tensions with France. The following June, Secretary of State Timothy Pickering reported that French privateers had seized nearly 316 of America’s ships since ending the neutral right agreement a year prior. They took the supplies and men to use in their war effort with England.

Having had the same problem with England a few years ago as well as wishing to avoid war, Adams decided to send delegates to France to get some kind of a Jay Treaty deal and restore neutral trade with them. Adams and his cabinet nominated three envoys to carry out this very mission to France. The men chosen for this task were former Minister to France Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Virginian Delegate and Attorney John Marshall, and a former Congressman Elbridge Gerry. Though at first Francis Dana, Chief Justice of Massachusetts was suppose to go, but could not make it, so Gerry went in his place.

Gerry and Marshall left for Europe, meet up with Pinckney who now lived in Amsterdam, and arrived in Paris on October 4, 1797, in hopes of restoring neutral trade rights and ending French privateering. Almost immediately, the envoys received word that the French Foreign Minister, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, wanted to setup a meeting with them in two days at two o’clock. Two days later, in a short, but pithy meeting, Talleyrand gave the men cards of hospitality to prevent them from being deported by French authorities while they were in France, as well as asked them to hold off negotiations until he had the approval of his formal report about the whole situation by the Directory*.

Talleyrand’s report to the Directory reviewed Franco-America relations from 1792 to 1797. In it, he concluded that Adams seemed more appeasing than Washington and that current political tension in America would prevent Adams from taking any strong anti-French policies. Also, direct war would not be advisable for either side, which was what both sides seemed to want to avoid, according to Talleyrand. From that, he concluded to the Directory that any and all negotiations should be conducted at a slow and careful pace. The Directory gave its approval to Talleyrand, and on October 14, the negotiations began, but with Talleyrand implementing an odd, but cunning, delay tactic.

Talleyrand had his secretary let it be known to a friend of Pinckney, who told Pinckney that the Directory had been “greatly exasperated” by a speech that President Adams had given back in May, and they demanded an explanation for it. According to Marshall, the particular parts of the speech that offended them were never expressed in any details; however, the informant said that they should not meet with the Directory until after they have finished negotiations with Talleyrand. Over the next many months of negotiations, the ‘Adams’ speech’ excuse would be used as stall tactic again and again by Talleyrand and his agents. Of these agents, the ones that would have the most interactions with the three U.S. representatives were Conrad Hottinguer (X), Pierre Bellamy (Y), Lucien Hauteval (Z), and the lesser known associate Nicholas Hubbard (W).

These men would later receive their aliases thanks in part to a letter that Gerry wrote to Adams, as Adams was about to make the events of the French negotiation public, but Gerry wanted to keep the agents names confidential. He stated to Adams that he “had promised Mr. X and Y that their names should in no event be made public” as well as saying “they did not produce, to my knowledge, any credential or document of any kind” that would have properly identified them. As such, history would come to known these four French agents as merely W, X, Y, and Z.

On October 18, three days after the first meeting, the envoys were at the home of one of these agents, Hubbard, when another agent, Hottinguer, arrived saying that he a message from Talleyrand. He took Pinckney into another room alone, where he first went on about Adams’ speech again, but more importantly, he next told him that if any kind of treaty was ever going to be reached, America first had to give France a loan to aid in its war with England in the amount of thirty-two million Dutch Guilders (~$12 Million) and a personal fee, or bribe, to Talleyrand for fifty thousand Pounds (~$250,000). Pinckney was shocked; he requested that his colleagues join him, and that Hottinguer restate his demands to all of them, as to prevent the risk of him jumping to his own conclusions about the proposal. Gerry and Marshall were equally surprised when Pinckney told them as well as when Hottinguer restated his terms the next night. The three envoys flatly refused him.

For Hottinguer and the others, the American diplomats’ response of imminent shock and offence was a little surprising, because in Europe, this method of personal bribery of government officials, or pot de vin, in order to expedite anything more quickly in the government, was quite common place. Talleyrand, after hearing Hottinguer’s report, sent another agent and friend, Pierre Bellamy, with Hottinguer to the next meeting with the envoys. During the next few days of negotiations, the two agents and the three envoys could not come to any agreements about the bribes, trade rights, or privateering. Frustrated, the envoys offered to send a man back to Adams for new instructions, but the French had to stop attacking American ships in the mean time. The French refused and negotiations broke down again.

Talleyrand desired to continue stalling, but also had to prevent the envoys from going home, so he sent, yet, another agent, Lucien Hauteval, to meet privately with Gerry and reassure him of Talleyrand’s sincerity in reaching a peaceful negotiation. Due to Hauteval’s inexperience in negotiating, playing the role of soother was primarily his for the rest of the negotiations. A week later, the negotiations resumed with three of agents X, Y, and Z pressuring the three envoys with threats of war if they did not receive their money. Bellamy even went so far as to indirectly imply that Gerry, Marshall, and Pinckney were second rate diplomats, and that if America had sent men like Aaron Burr or James Madison, an agreement would have been reached by now. The envoys held their previous stance of not paying the bribes, in addition, it was at the end of this meeting when a frustrated Pinckney uttered his famous line “No, No, not a sixpence” in response to the French demands for a bribe. When these meeting records were published a year later, an American newspaper would spin this line as the other famous quote from the XYZ affair “Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute!"

The reason why Talleyrand and his agents had this unwavering desire to receive their money, William Stinchcombe, history professor at Syracuse University, argues in the William and Mary Quarterly, can be answered by the economic and social insecurities that were still lingering in France as a byproduct of their revolution. They had lost many of their investments in war, and now they sought a new way to restore their lost fortunes. “In delaying the negotiations, Talleyrand and his associates did not intend to risk the peace, but only to reward themselves.” To this end, Talleyrand employed other less abrasive agents besides X, Z, and Y. They were able to keep stringing the three envoys along for another five more months using more subtle tactics. This change in agents was a brilliant idea on his part, as it bought him the extra time he wanted.

By December 1797, all three envoys were well aware of Talleyrand’s attempt to delay them. They became quite frustrated with each other due to the months of failed negotiations. They argued about whether or not they should go home. Gerry, who had seemingly been more open to the French way, argued that if the mission failed, it would lead to war as well as “disgrace republicism” for both countries. Marshall had up until now showed a willingness to cooperate, but at this moment was less than thrilled with French hospitality. He argued that they should soon go home if a treaty could not be reached soon.

Marshall further disagreed with Gerry and argued that the failure to produce a treaty would not lead to war between the two nations. He also rejected the idea that France was a true republic. Many years later, Marshall wrote in his autobiography, “France is not and never will be a republic is a truth which I scarcely dare whisper even to myself," and he concluded that “it is in America and America only that human liberty has found an asylum.”

Pinckney also had become completely annoyed with Gerry, he stated that he was “habitually suspicious, and hesitates so much, that it is very unpleasant to do business with him.” In spite of their personal differences, they still held onto their convictions about not capitulating to Talleyrand’s demands for a bribe before any formal negotiations could begin. By January 1798, they had written a memorandum, which listed all their grievances with France during this whole mission, especially the earlier encounters with W, X, Y, and Z, and were ready to go home. However, Talleyrand still had few aces up his sleeves as well as a queen.

Back in October 1797, while attending a dinner party, the three delegates had met an enchanting noble woman and close associate of Talleyrand’s named Reine Philiberte de Varicourt, Madame de Villette. Madame de Viellete, a young widow, was a follower of Voltaire, as well as being rather pro-American allowed her to make quite the impression on Gerry and Marshall. So in November, when the three envoys had their personal conflicts with one another, both Gerry and Marshall moved out of Pinckney’s house in Paris and into small home on an estate outside of town that was owned by Madame de Villette. Whether at Talleyrand’s request or her own personal reasons, she offered her tenants many special services. She taught Gerry French, took Marshall to the theater, and often threw parties for both them. Poor Gerry had to explain to his wife “why he had moved into the house of an attractive widow in her thirties.” Gerry exclaimed, “that Paris crowds and burglars had made the Pinckney house so dangerous that he had to sleep with a pair of pistols under his pillow.” For some odd reason, the Pinckney family never expressed any such threats or feelings of concerns.
As the three had made out their memorandum of complaints against France, of which Talleyrand would later comment to a friend that “Frenchman were not use to receiving such long epistles,” nonetheless he was determined to keep them around a bit longer. In February, the men asked for their passports back, but Talleyrand ask for another meeting, and they agreed. However, matters of the state would have to wait, as Madame de Villette and another female friend took Marshall and Gerry away on a little weekend excursion to Madame de Villette’s summer Chateau in the country at the request of Talleyrand. When they returned, Talleyrand suggested that they pay the loan after the war with England was over, this way, it would appear as if America was continuing its neutrality. Gerry saw this as good opportunity to further negotiate, but Marshall and Pinckney did not share his sentiments.

The two also pointed to their original instructions, which were not to pay any kind of loan to France. Furthermore, they knew that had “no power even to negotiate for loan of money,” because the U.S. government had not “contemplated such circumstances in any degree whatsoever.” Thus, even if the envoys had agreed to make a payment to France, it would have been voided by the fact that such an act excided their powers given to them by Adams. If the envoys had deceived France in this manner, it only would have made the current tensions between the two nations worse. Also, at Pinckney’s behest they never made this fact known to Talleyrand. Because Pinckney felt they would longer be able to get an audience with Talleyrand if he knew the envoys could not officially offer him the money. As such, the envoys had to try negotiating without given into Talleyrand’s demand for a bribe.

The three envoys would have two more meetings with Talleyrand in March, but they were in a stalemate, though there was no real talk of loans or bribes, both sides blamed each other, and nothing was going to be accomplished. “Talleyrand still declined to abandon French maritime attacks or discrimination against American vessels, and the envoys still refused to acknowledge any contradiction between the Jay Treaty and the 1778 French Alliance.” Talks broke down for the final time. Both Marshall and Pinckney thought a war would not break out, so they got their passports back and journeyed home. Gerry stayed in Paris a little while longer, in a useless effort to negotiate, but after more dead ends and orders from Adams, he came back home three months later.
In March 1798, Pinckney returned with his family to the Netherlands and Marshall arrived in America, a national hero, by the time he gotten back to America, the whole XYZ affair scandal had been made public. The fact that he had resisted those corrupted Europeans made Marshall a celebrity and greatly increased the popularity of the Federalist party. One newspaper called Marshall’s behavior as having been “marked by an affection of dignity and of reserve which were very unseasonable” in France, because it was filled with the “grossest corruption and barefaced falsehood” of any country in the world.

In June, Secretary of State Timothy Pickering, following Adams’ orders, wrote Gerry insisting that there seemed to be no “probability or hope that existed that you would accomplish the object of your mission.” Furthermore, he told Gerry that the “respect due to yourself and to your country irresistibly required that you turn your back on a Government (France) that treated both with contempt.” Following Pickering’s letter, Gerry informed Talleyrand of his pressure to return to America and asked for his passport back.

However, even after Gerry left, it still did not stop Talleyrand from trying to keep Gerry around. Talleyrand, even went so far as to, according to one newspaper at the time, “give secret orders to the commandant to detain the Sophia (Gerry’s ship).” This too proved fruitless for Talleyrand, as Gerry would still make it home that October. Conversely, unlike Marshall who came home as hero, Gerry was unfortunately viewed by many as French sympathizer because he choose to stay in France so long.
While these three had been dealing with their problems in France, Adams had been contending with his own problems back in America. As word about failed negotiations with France reached America, many in Congress, as well as the public, demanded an explanation for why Adams’ and his envoys ostensibly failed to bargain any kind of a treaty. Adams went before Congress on March 19, 1798, where he debriefed them on the matter. He told them about the demands for a loan to the French war cause, the personal bribe that was necessary to do business with Talleyrand, as well as showing them all the correspondence letters between the three envoys and Adams’ cabinet.
Americans were inflamed with anger over the whole incident, and many, particularly the Pro-British factions, demanded retribution on France for its disrespectful demeanor toward America. All across the country there was a growing demand that America go to war with France. One newspaper said that the “Government of France, from the destruction of the Bastille, to the present hour, has exceeded in tyranny and injustice.” Also, France and America were once part of the same “pure virtue and republicanism,” but now France drifted away down a path of a “bloody and lawless revolution.” The article went to talk about how American patriots need to be ready for a war with France, because of its past actions, war was not only just, but necessary to defend American honor.

Not long after testifying before Congress, Adams said in another speech that following June, he would not “send another minster to France without assurance that he will be received, respected, honored as representative of a great, free, powerful, and independent nation.” Though Adams spoke with more powerful words, he knew, as Washington had that America, as still young nation, could not risk getting dragged into a total war with France without serve consequences. In spite of the fact, many in Adams’ party wanted to go war, as did many of the citizens, Adams knew would have to follow a careful course of diplomacy. Even as the Quasi-War with France raged on, Adams still did not give up hope of negotiations with France. The adoption of this foreign policy with France would cost Adams his political career after his term as president, but it would protect America from destruction.

Congress also acted boldly in order to subvert French interests in America, first, by passing a series of Alien and Seditions Acts of June 1798. These laws did several things, such as, extending the waiting period to become a citizen from five to fourteen years, and they allowed the president to deport any alien considered a national treat to peace, in this case, Pro-French radicals. Also, any alien who was member of country that the U.S. was at war with could be deported too. Lastly, the more dubious law, the Sedition Act, which made it illegal to publish or publicly say anything that was slanderous, or with malice, about America was very extreme and seemed to violate American’s newly formed constitutional rights. These laws only were in affect a few years due to their unconstitutional nature, but these laws have come back into play in U.S. history whenever America has been in major war.

Another thing Congress did was to void all treaties with France and create a Navy Department, which commissioned the constructions of naval warships to combat the French privateers in Caribbean. These combined actions would lead to the start of a Quasi-War between America and France, in which neither side would ever officially declare, due to their own respective political interests. In September 1798, Talleyrand learned of America’s outrage about the bribes. In order to help smooth things over, he began a series communications with U.S. foreign ministers John Q. Adams (the president’s son) and William Vans Murphy. Talleyrand told the ministers that if the America would send new envoys, they “shall be received in character, and shall enjoy the privileges attached to his character by the law of nations, and that a minister of equal rank, title, and powers shall be appointed to treat with him, to discuss and conclude all controversies between the two Republics by a new treaty.”
At the bequest of his son and Murphy, who thought Talleyrand offer to be sincere, President Adams finally agreed to send delegates back to France to negotiate. Adams wanted very much to avoid further conflict with France, but he had to be sure that if negotiations did resume that America would not be treated as impertinently as she had been during the XYZ affair. So, in February 1799, Adams sent a memo to the Senate, informing them that he was convinced that it was now appeared plausible to “restore tranquility” with the French Republic and he was awaiting their decision. He also petitioned that the Senate nominate Murphy as one of the representative, because he was already involved with and experienced in this delicate situation.

Congress would spend many more months arguing about whom the other envoys would be, because many still wanted to continue the fight with France, even people in Adams’ own Federalist party. Thus, this selection process served as stall tactic for many who wanted that fight. Finally after nearly a year, they choose their three commissioners, including Murphy, Oliver Ellsworth, and Will Davie to go to Paris. In March 1800, the three arrived in France. Negotiations continued over the next few months between the three U.S. Envoys and Talleyrand. Napoleon himself also intervened at different points, in order to restore all the damage caused by XYZ Affair and the political turmoil that had arisen over the years. On September 30, 1800, an agreement was finally reached called The Treaty of Mortefontaine (or Convention of 1800), which ended the quasi-war, voided all previous troublesome treaties, and restored many of the neutral trade rights. The overall gist of the agreement was to create partnerships and not alliances, which served both sides interests well enough for now.

Adams, by this point was tired of the whole affair and wanted the matter to be closed. He told the Senate that he would have agreed to the treaty “unconditionally, yet as in this point I found I had the misfortune to differ in opinion from so high a constitutional authority as the Senate” Though he went on to say that because it was in the best interest of the US to ratify the treaty with certain prescribed conditions, America will complete all her final treaty ratification with France. However, Adams concluded by adding that “I shall take no further measures relative to this business...my successor may proceed with them according to his wisdom.” In the end, Adams, though successful in avoiding direct war and negotiating favorably with France, decided that he had enough and simply wanted to wash his hand of the whole XYZ Affair.

After the final ratification was signed, Franco-American tensions calmed down, but trouble was brewing over the horizon. Napoleon’s interest and ambitions to have some of his own territory on the North American Continent would only further exasperate this already troublesome partnership. However, that is a story for another time, for the moment, things were tranquil for America.

Adams’ masterful handling of the situation and peace negations kept the U.S. from getting pulled directly into European affairs, despite many Americans strong feelings to go to war. The Alien and Sedition Acts that Congress had enacted changed not only the law, but how people thought of the Federal Government and its power. All of this, coupled with the XYZ Affair and Quasi-War would set the status quo for American foreign policy for the next twelve years. The XYZ Affair had created a ripple affect that extended far beyond the gates of 1798 Paris. Dickens was right; this era was the best and worse of times. For it was indeed the age of wisdom and foolishness.

Trujillo: A Necessary Evil

“I know that one day I may not be necessary tomorrow, but today I am.” These are the words uttered by Yuri Orlov in the movie Lord of War. Orlov was an arms dealer in the 1990’s, who was eventually arrested for his illegal sales and dealings. When it seemed as though he was about to go to jail, the U.S. Government let him go, not because was innocent, but because he was guilty. Orlov pointed out that his customers are enemies of America’s enemies. He, at this moment, was a necessary evil in a world of shifting alliances and corrupt political strife.

Though Orlov was a fictitious character who was loosely based on real people, this concept of having and exploiting the ‘necessary evil’ is not fictitious, and is nothing new for the U.S. Government. For example, it can be traced back to earliest days of the revolution, when George Washington secretly used some of the lowest forms of scum, criminals and thieves to spy on the British forces. In Washington’s time, espionage was looked down upon in aristocratic circles, his circles. It was something gentlemen simply did not do; in terms of class, it was beneath them, which was why he conducted his meetings with these people in private. In spite of whatever threat of ostracization Washington may publicly endure, he seemingly felt it was worth having the intelligence on the British. For Washington, having this military information was essential, even if its providers were social ruffians; it was a necessary evil that helped Washington and America win the war.

Just because Orlov and Washington’s spies were necessary to the U.S. Government in their own respective times does not mean that their own necessary evils as well as those of others cannot expire in their worth. Such was the case for one Dominican Republic Dictator, Rafael Trujillo, who at 10:00pm on May 30, 1961 was on his way home when his limousine was stop by three cars. Eight men got out of the cars and unleashed seventy rounds of machine gun ammunition into Trujillo, killing him, thus ending his more than thirty years of rule in the Dominican Republic. However, these assassins were allegedly supplied with the weapons by the CIA.

The United States had dealt with and supported Trujillo’s dictatorship for years. Trujillo had been receiving much support from the U.S. during the 1940’s and 1950’s, but it seemed that in May 1961, Trujillo had out lived his usefulness as far the CIA was concerned. The necessary evil was no long necessary. What motivated the CIA to take such action if the accusations are true? How did the Dominican Dictator obtain his power and manage to rule for thirty years nearly uncontested? Finally, what role (if any) did world politics play in Trujillo’s rise, dominance, and eventual assassination?

In 1891, Rafael Trujillo was born in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. He grew up in a country that was mostly torn apart by war and chaos by the various political factions at that time. The U.S. had actually sent in Marines to establish some order and a temporary government to restore peace. In 1918, he joined the Dominican National Guard, which was trained by the U.S. Marines themselves. By 1924, when the Marines pulled out, Trujillo was in charge of the entire guard.

It is important to remember that these were the events in the world in which Trujillo grew up around, and are instrumental when trying to understand the man. He witnessed a country that was in utter disarray, but when a strong military presence arrived, some sort of harmony and order was achieved. This was a lesson about military strength that Trujillo would certainly not forget. In 1930, he popularly won the presidential election. However, he claimed to have taken ninety-five percent of the votes. It is this author’s opinion, he was either lying or he simply fixed the election in some way, because that no one could win a fair democratic election with so many votes. None the less, he was the uncontested ruler of the Dominican Republic and let his people know it by establishing a secret police consisting of seven sub-parts who all reported to him. Trujillo had no problem using force or torture to get what he wanted, and he removed all who would dare to oppose his rule. In should also be noted that throughout his rule, he managed to bring the D.R. out of debt and major depression while accumulating a personal fortune worth almost one billion dollars.
One of the best demonstrations of Trujillo’s ruthlessness as dictator was that of the massacre of 12,000 Haitians in 1937. A huge famine had inflicted much damage on the Dominican’s neighboring country of Haiti; so many starving Haitians with nothing to lose came pouring into the Dominican Republic. Trujillo ordered his men to fire on anyone who crossed the border. That day, Trujillo had ordered the deaths of nearly 12,000 men, women, and children. Trujillo lost the respect and support of many other Latin American countries that day, but not America. To make some kind of an International apology, Trujillo sent his wife on a propaganda campaign to show Dominican support for European war refugees, and even let 100,000 Jews seek refuge on his island. Again, this was meant to improve his image and combat his critics. As for the dead Haitians, he ordered their bodies to be placed in a mass grave site that was then covered over, and a Catholic shrine dedicated to one of its saints was placed over it. I visited this shrine and mass grave in July 2005 while on a summer long mission’s trip, where I learned about Trujillo for the first time.
On that same trip, I also visited one of Trujillo’s summer getaway mansions, which is on a mountain top overlooking the city of Santiago. This mansion had been converted into a bed and breakfast, but its name had not changed--Camp David (See Figure A). During the 1930’s, much of the world was devastated by an economic, depression or by war, and the Dominican Republic was no exception to this depression. Trujillo, probably still filled with memories of how American troops had successfully occupied the D.R. before, reasoned the only chance he had to keep his economically broken countrymen from staging a revolt was to get support and backing once more from the Americans.

He went to great lengths to convince the U.S. Government (U.S.G.) he was on their side, other than naming his vacation home after his American counterpart’s (Roosevelt) newly created vacation spot. Trujillo also visited America in July 1939, where he paid his respects to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and he placed a wreath on Washington’s tomb at Mt. Vernon all before meeting with the president. He also told reporters, “We [D.R.G.] are sincerely bonded to the policy of peace and harmony with the U.S. and I offer my heartiest cooperation to the service of its ideals.” Many critics were asking Roosevelt why he would meet with such a man, and he replied, “He may a S.O.B., but his is our S.O.B.”

Fortunately for Trujillo, FDR had announced his Good Neighbor Policy, which was mostly America’s attempt at winning favor with the Latin American countries that they had exploited and ignored for many decades as well as to promote trade and capitalism. In addition, the U.S.G. was also trying to prevent the spread of Communism, Nazism, and Fascism in the Americas. So perhaps having a local brutal dictator on your side was better than having a local communist one in the mind of the U.S.G. For better or worse, Trujillo’s regime was needed in the Caribbean to prevent any form of fascist state from emerging.

Finally, the time had come when it seemed that Trujillo’s presence as a necessary evil was no longer necessary as far as the U.S. was concerned. As for the plans and events leading up to the assassination of Trujillo, they played out like this: the U.S. Government (USG) involvement in the plot to assassinate the Dominican dictator began with the Eisenhower Administration in February 1960, when Eisenhower began to consider giving covert aid to Dominican dissidents. By April of that year, Eisenhower approved a contingency plan which said that the U.S. would support and take immediate action to remove Trujillo “once a suitable successor regime could be found” to replace the dictatorship.

The Eisenhower Administration seemed to have wanted to remove Trujillo. However, they did not want another communist Castro-type regime so close to America to fill the power vacuum if Trujillo was removed; this may explain the Administration’s cautiousness (a cautiousness shared by the next administration) about rushing in and removing Trujillo. Why trade one evil dictator for one who was possible worse, maybe even communist one? Also, the U.S.G. knew Trujillo was increasing the stakes and was more frequently brutalizing and abusing his people, but more importantly, other Latin American countries knew what he was doing; this, in turn, looked unfavorable on America. Since Trujillo, as previously mentioned, had such strong relations with the U.S. during past few decades, he was, in the eyes of those Latin countries the protégé of America. Whatever he did, it seemed as if the U.S. had given him the ‘go ahead on’ to do whatever he pleased. Therefore, other than preventing another possible communist state developing so close to home, the U.S.G. additionally had to consider saving face.

It is important to remember that all of this was happening on the backdrop of early 1960’s Cold War tension with the U.S. and U.S.S.R, so the U.S. did not want any more countries too close to its borders to become another Cuba (a communist state), and give the Soviets yet another foothold so close to America. In this mindset, the decisions made over the next few years on the part of the U.S.G., particularly the CIA, make more sense. In the spring of 1960, the U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Joseph Farland, established contact with a group of Dominican dissidents who wanted to overthrow Trujillo, whom Farland referred to as “moderate, Pro-Americans that want to establish a democratic form of government.” However, he left the D.R. in May 1960, but asked his Deputy-Chief-of-Mission, Henry Dearborn, to remain as the contact man between the CIA and the local dissidents. It became official, or rather ‘unofficial’ when Dearborn received cable on June 16, 1960 informing him that his role as “communications link” was now “unofficially” approved by the Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-America Affairs Roy Rubottom.
Before returning to Washington in May, Farland was asked by some of the dissidents for a “limited number sniper rifles with telegraphic sight.” Farland agreed to pass on this request to Washington. He did ask for the weapons and actually received approval from both the State Dept. and the CIA. In July 1961, officials in the CIA felt that providing the weapons would prove useful in not only overthrowing Trujillo, but would also serve in building a close relationship with those who wanted to carry out the assassination, since it seemed they would take over once Trujillo was gone. As was stated in one memorandum, “providing the arms as requested would contribute significantly toward this end [of having closer relations].”

The CIA was going to air-drop twelve sterile (or untraceable) sniper rifles into the Dominican Republic at location, previously, suggested by Farland, but once Dearborn received the cable informing him of what was about to happen, the Dominican dissidents instructed Dearborn that they did not want to make any moves on Trujillo. The reasoning for this was that they felt Trujillo was about to be pressured to step down by the OAS (Organization of American States). Apparently Trujillo had a personal hatred for the Venezuelan leader, Rómulo Betancourt, and had tried to have him assassinated but failed. Betancourt went to the OAS, who “voted unanimously to sever diplomatic relations and to impose economic sanctions on the Dominican Republic.” The Dominican dissidents felt this would force Trujillo out of power and they would not have to risk themselves, but they were wrong in that he did not step down. As such, the sniper rifles were never delivered to the Dominican Republic.
In August 1960, with the sanctions now on Trujillo, the U.S. had removed most of its diplomatic personnel from the island. However, Dearborn remained as the Consul General and served as the CIA’s Chief of Station. Over the next few months, Dearborn reported the desire of the dissidents to continue their planning for the assassination of Trujillo to the CIA in addition to their need for the weapons to overthrow him. By the end of the Eisenhower Administration on January 19, 1961, Dearborn was informed that the Dominicans would be getting their new weapons and other materials. The next day, the Kennedy Administration would take office, and over the next few months, world events would soon play a major and dramatic role in how America would continue to be involved in the assassination of Trujillo.
The dissident leaders had actually flew to New York City and met with different CIA officials in February 1961. They requested a variety of accessories such as pistols, carbines, cameras, and few fragment grenades. They also talked about various ways that Trujillo might be assassinated such as planting bombs, remote detonating, ambushing his car, poisoning him, and direct assaults on him with firearms. One thing the dissidents made very clear to CIA officials was that they felt that the only way to successfully remove the Trujillo regime “would be his personal assassination.”

Over the next few months the CIA supplied Dearborn with a few pistols and three 30 caliber M1 carbines to give to the dissidents for the purpose of “personal protection.” Also, some machine guns arrived in March, but Dearborn was not ordered to give them to dissidents so they stayed in the station. Thus, for the next two months, the dissidents and Dearborn had to try to convince the CIA to let them use to weapons if they would have any good chance of pulling off a successful assassination attempt against the Dominican dictator.

The reason for this sudden hesitation on the part of America was because of what had recently aspired on another Caribbean island a few miles away, which would be regarded as one of the worst covert operation failures in America history--The Bay of Pigs Incident. The CIA had been conspiring with Cuban exiles to overthrow the newly formed Castro Communist State. However, due to some last minute tactic changes by President Kennedy, the whole mission ended bloodily. Many people were killed on both sides in the April of 1961. To make matters worse, the press got wind of the situation and exposed it to the whole world. In addition to failing, America’s image was tarnished as was the reputation of the American Intelligence Community. For these reasons of utter internationally known failure on the part of CIA and the Kennedy Administration, it was understandable that if they failed so badly at assassinating one Caribbean dictator that they would not want to try and go after another.
The Bay of Pigs fiasco might have deterred the CIA from wanting to be involved in the Trujillo plot. They even wanted the dissidents to hold off on carrying out their plans for a while, but the Dominicans were determined as ever to remove Trujillo. They said that this was their affair and they would not stop just because it was “inconvenient for the U.S.G.” As Dearborn reasoned and expressed to the CIA, they have already helped the dissidents to some extent and were already implicated, so they might as well continue to support them in order to provide the greatest chance for success.

With the assassination seeming imminent, the State Dept and CIA made the Kennedy Administration fully aware of what was about to transpire explaining how the CIA had supplied the weapons to the Dominican dissidents and what they had intended do with them. Kennedy, after meeting with his advisors, sent this cable to Dearborn on May 29, 1961, one day before the assassination took place:

We must not run risk of U.S. association with political assassins, Since the U.S. as matter of general policy cannot condone assassination. (Original emphasis was added) This last principal is overriding and must prevail in doubtful situations…Continue to inform the dissident elements of U.S. support for their position.

The next day Trujillo was assassinated by the same guns the CIA had previously given the Dominican leaders, knowing fully what they intended to do with them. Kennedy was in Paris when he heard about the assassination and would soon meet with top cabinet members to discuss what could happen next. Dearborn was called back to D.C. to join the meeting, where he explained that he understood Kennedy’s cable as meaning: “I don’t care if they kill him, just don’t get anything pinned on us, because we are not the ones doing it.” The world found out about the assassination soon after, and many suspected that the CIA was involved somehow. Nevertheless, no one could prove anything concretely because all of the documents were either confiscated by the CIA or destroyed by Dearborn. In terms of America, there was never any evidence that suggested that anyone was every reprimanded for the assassination. In fact, given the other recent failures of the CIA, many viewed this as a “success.”

As for the Dominicans, the D.R. President Joaquín Balaguer, who had been more of Trujillo’s political puppet, with no real power of his own, gradually moved the people into a more democratic style of government for the next few years. The Trujillo family themselves fled the country, taking the former dictator’s body with them to Paris, where they would live the rest of their lives. Trujillo’s son tried to carry on his father’s legacy as leader of the military, but it lasted a mere five months or so before he too fled to France. Moreover, this whole incident helped many people obtain their hard earned freedom from a tyrannical and brutal dictator.
Given everything that occurred with other missions, this one was considered a breath of fresh air, but it was recommended that CIA’s supplying of weapons and equipment be kept secret as it could have lead to another potentially embarrassing mark for America. Truly, when one takes a step back and looks at all the U.S.G.’s political agenda and its double-talk with Dominicans, one notices how they used the dissidents more than the dissidents used America. Trujillo had out lived his usefulness to the U.S. general political interest. As such, the necessary evil was no longer necessary, and all the U.S.G. needed was a means to remove him without having to do it themselves and getting caught. With the help of dissidents America had their scapegoats. In one sense, as Yuri Orlov may have put it, Trujillo’s ‘tomorrow’ had finally come.

For those who read my last post notice how much I tore into Air China, well you might be thinking maybe he a bad experience or it was just one of those flights. If that’s what you think then you’re I am sorry to say: wrong. Brad, aren’t you being a little bias? Yes, Yes I am, and justifiable so. Just as the Founding Fathers gave a list of grievances against their enemies explaining and defending their actions. So, I have created a list of reasons why I will never fly Air China again, and I encourage you not to ever fly with either If can avoid it.

10. My first flight though only 1.5 hrs was a hot box, no person should be sweating to death when there is a few inches of plastic windows between you and a -40 C atmosphere.

9. My Connecting flight was complete Icebox, this plane had no dial control or vent to adjust speed or flow, so everyone froze for 6 hrs, which is still better than hot, but still…

8. While in Seoul, our flight to Beijing was delayed a few hrs which was fine we had lots of time to spare. While roaming our part of the terminal we heard the PA announce many other flights that were boarding, however, they never announced our flight. When we got back to our gate at the time stated they were already doing the final boarding, and they never called it. Almost missed the flight.

7. On the way back our flight was delayed for 3hrs so 3am instead of 12am and they didn’t have it posted online, so I arrived at 9pm that evening and was like crap I am bored.

6. Air China, had no employees working their stations to check bags and luggage, so a huge line of 300ppl started to form around the airport much to everyone dismay and trouble.

5. Once employees showed up and another 1hr of waiting for my turn in line, they told Daniel and I that there was nothing they could do for us until 11pm (its was now 10:30 and we had previously waited in the stupid for 1.5hrs seeming for nothing at this point). Reason for this Fail move I still do know…

4. At 11pm, an Air China employee pulled us aside and told us we’d have to get a new flight and that once we got to Beijing everything would be taken care, When we got to Beijing, our names weren’t even on the list of people needing changes to their flight they had sent over

3. We waited at this service desk for 1.5hrs after arriving for them to figure out why weren’t on the list, confirm passport crap, find another flight…you’d think they had never had to rebook a person on another flight due to delays and bad weather. Running around like headless chickens.

2. When I got off the plane and arrived in the air china terminal I really had to go bathroom, and every airport I have every been through has bathrooms right there when you get off the plane for obvious reasons. But not air china, this one, the airport designers share blame as well, but by this point, its air china’s fault.

1. This Communist ran airline is as efficient as everything else communist and gov’t ran. This traveling should have only taken me 9-10hrs at most…I traveled 18-20 each way because of their incompetence. My 1st and last time Air China. NEVER AGAIN!!

Getting to Singapore: The Ups and The Downs

We'll I got up early Saturday morning, 7am, Daniel (my fellow teacher) and I left for the bus station to Seoul, which is about 4hr from Geochang. After watching Slumdog Millionaire and some other shorts films we arrived in town. With a few more hours to spare Daniel and I had to go buy him some new shoes (as he has big feet and shoes in his size is hard to come buy). We went to the part of town called Etwon (sp). This place is like a “little America” and as Daniel was getting his shoes; I found it. After months of looking and drink their cheap crap imitation I found real Mt Dew from America. It was 12oz of Heaven straight from the good old US of A. It cost me about $1.50 American but it was so worth it. Needless to say, as Kohute would put it, “I crushed it like 3 fatties in dodgeball!!”. After that we made it to the other bus station that would take us to the airport. This was a rather unpleasant experience. I won't go into all the details, but let's just say that in a one week's time they completely reorganized their buildings layout of ticketing distribution, and this coupled with stupid people working the help desk; we ended up walking around the terminal 3 times until we found the place we needed to be.

At the airport, the flight got delayed by 1hr, so Daniel and I got dinner, at which I dared him10,000won(~$10) to kiss this poster of a pretty girl on a cart in the public eatery and of course being a guy..he did it..lol Mind you he is Canadian and once said one could fly from the America to the US, implying to travel internationally..(love ya Daniel if you are reading this). The Flight from Seoul to Beijing was short, but man was it awful the plane was so hot, 200+ people and a half ass working a/c is rather terrible. I am not exaggerating when I say the plane was a least 80 degrees F. Warning, never fly Air China, unless you really have too. Upon, landing I can now say I have been to China, sort of if you count the airport..lol. On a side note if you every do go to China, don't order the drink “sex on the beach” and except to get what they serve in America. But rather expect something like a “sex on a dirty polluted river/beach” or something like that. There was nothing fruity about this drink. It was just small brown and reeking of vodka and something else I couldn't id. Also, on a side note, if you ever set off a metal detector in an airport by accident because of a few quarters in your pocket be prepared for a thorough patdown of your whole person by a rather cute woman, which will leave you feeling completely awkward and uneasy the whole time. Last side note, if you have seen Slumdog you may get this joke, if not please read on. But we met a Scottish guy, who may have lived by the Big Ben Lock next to Sean Connery's Flat.

Anyhow, other than the random silliness in China, mostly brought on by about 18hrs of continues traveling that day, we got on the 2nd plane from china to Singapore. The 6hr flights was really really cold, which is ironic compared to this 1st air china plane and was a little bumpy, but mostly uneventful, but again don't fly Air China, they are cheap but well…you get what you pay for a to say. After 23 hrs of being awake and traveling for most of that I arrived in Singapore, Met Andrew Law my friend from college, whose house I'll be crashing out at this week, and after we got to his place I showered and napped. Boy is it Hot!! Go Equator Living!!…I'll post my Singapore experience itself in my next post. God Bless You All!!

As any one who knows me well enough knows I don't care much for American History, say for the Revolutionary period. Here is a segment of some letters that John Adams Wrote his Wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776.

Yesterday the greatest Question was decided, which ever was debated in America, and a greater perhaps, never was or will be decided among Men. A Resolution was passed without one dissenting Colony "that these united Colonies, are, and of right ought to be free and independent States, and as such, they have, and of Right ought to have full Power to make War, conclude Peace, establish Commerce, and to do all the other Acts and Things, which other States may rightfully do." You will see in a few days a Declaration setting forth the Causes, which have impell'd Us to this mighty Revolution, and the Reasons which will justify it, in the Sight of God and Man. A Plan of Confederation will be taken up in a few days.

But the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. -- Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

I don't know about you, but Adams' letter, though maybe hard to understand a bit here and there. Without a doubt though it is clear that Adams had a hope about this country that it would be something great. Even before the the actual idea of victory in this war was even a thought to be considered as sane or reasonable, Adams believed that Americans for generations to come would look at this event as the turning point in American history, the world would change because of it,and we should celebrate it as such. He encourages use to give Thanks to God Almighty and to celebrate with the loudest joy and pride we can muster for this great nation of ours. So as America in 2009, faces great challenges and hardships let us remember the greatness and potential that our forefathers saw in this democratic experiment that is America, and may we once again in the midst of chaos and trouble reach for the Hope that Adams had.

Iran's previous election results

Its obvious this election wasn't fair, but if you look at the past election results , this one is really no different, yet no Iranian, or foreign gov't, otherwise really protested those..so i don't know what to think. The truth is that in any fair democracy a candidate getting above 60% of the vote, especially when more than 2 ppl are running for the same office is just so unlikely that there has to be fraud somewhere...lol

So according to wikipedia (i only list the top 2, but others candidates did run but all got only a few %):

My 1st Korean Haircut

So on Thursday morning I started my day off “normal,” I talk with Ashley on skype for an hour or so. With my hair curling on the side I knew it was time for a cut. So I got some pictures of the kind of cut I wanted, and have had in the past. Since there was no way I knew how to tell the barber in Korean I want a number 3 fade, sideburns, bangs, round in…blah blah, so the pictures were a great a idea, Thank you Google for your suggestion. LOL! Anyhow, I should the lady my pictures of what I wanted and she having a good eye and hands, I got my hair cut. It was pretty sweet afterward another woman washed my hair in there sink, that was 1st time I ever had done to my hair before. So all that cutting and washing was so cheap like ~6 dollars American (or 8000 Won). After that I gave my two haircut ladies each 5000 Won of like 3 or 4 dollar tip, which other than it being a very big tip; Koreans do not even a tipping system. So, they suddenly loved me whole bunch, so now that I have made a good relationship with so the next time go back there I’ll get the good treatment. Yay! Also, seeing as how I normally spent 12-15 bucks on a cut plus tip is like 15 or 18..i think I made out just as well as they did as far I am concern. After that I got ready for my classes. They went so much better today, I was way less nervous that yesterday, and with 6 new sets of kids it felt like a fresh start. ( I teach 6 sets of 50 min classes m-w-f and another tues and thurs…roughly speaking…it was long, but a good day..Now I am sleepy!

Catching my breathe

1st few days in Korea:
Ok the jetlag and craziness is settling down a bit, I thought I’d write a little bit. So much has been happening I don’t even know where to start. Finally, after getting some sleep after 30+ hrs I got some sleep; about 10hrs. After I got up (I was at a motel), I moved into my new apt, I really didn’t even have time to unpack, I had to come down and meet the new co-workers. After some friendly introductions, I started to shadow a few of the teachers here, whose names are Andrew and Cheri, they are married and from S. Africa. After a few hours, I was able to unpack in my new apt. The apt is pretty much like living in an Almy suite, only 1 person in the room and there is no connection to my roommate. There is a unique addition though, a sort of veranda, that I can step out onto and see the town and woods beyond me. I had dinner with Cheri and Andrew, and he took me around and showed where the local grocery stores. When I got back I was exhausted and passed out soon after. The next day, I woke up at 7am, internal clock not letting me sleep longer (I work from 2pm-8:30pm). So having nothing to do and not have my internet or anything like that yet. I started walking around the neighborhood block after block the town is a lot like American. So blocks are retail strips other are people homes that are fairly similar to ours. Just replace all the English signs and word and people with Korea ones…lol. About 9am I went grocery shopping all by myself. it’s hard to shop for food, when the ppl and writing are another language that you don’t speak. I went shopping in the DR before, but those words though Spanish, a least used the same ABC’s as us and the same symbols and were close enough I might be able to figure out, But not Korean, these symbols are as foreign to me as the Lifetime channel.
So after that fun adventure, a fellow Korean teacher, Eric, took me to the hospital to have physical as it were. All there medical technology seems way more advance than ours, but in some ways not. The technology was advanced, which was cool, but when it came to something as simple as urine test, instead of a plastic cup and lid, they gave me a Dixie cup basically. You thought that little test was embarrassing with the cup; imagine having to fill up a Dixie cup…needless to say I am glad to that test was over. I spent the rest of the day following teachers around and watching how they run their classes. After that Eric and I went to do some shopping at the 1000 waon store (dollar store for us). Then, got some pizza with potatoes and meat which is very good. On Wed I started my 1st day teaching. My 1st class, I had no idea what the lesion plan was since the teacher who had that class before me (kids in that class are about 7-9), was gone, so I had to look at their hmwk to figure where we were. One girl in class was crying when I got there because another boy in class had hit her before class had begun, so for the rest of class all those kids were talking about was how the boy got into trouble…it was a horrible first experience. My other classes gradually got better as the day progressed. By the end, with 13 year old kids the class was better and a least calm. Anyhow, after work there was bible study. Praise God that 3 of my fellow teachers had started up this study, this was such an answer to prayer before I came over here. I will be going to church with them on Sunday. Also, I went shopping this day by myself, which can be hard; it requires a lot of gesture and some pen and paper. I got some shirts,, luckily the clerk spoke enough English to help me out. Afterward, I saw a baskin robins ice cream store. It was like a piece of American heaven in all 30+ flavors. Best $2.00 I have spent all month.

DAY 4:
Travel day aka judgment day…Have I mentioned how much I hate heights.. I have flown on 12 planes in the last 5 yrs…I still don’t like them…Take offs and landings are like….lots of praying for me….flying is okay…it the looming dread of crashing into a mt or a terrorist that I don’t like. Needless to say I didn’t sleep much. Like an 1 hr. My ride to airport came at 5am. I got checked into JFK and made it through security pretty easy..just the normal stuff..no special treatment for me..YAY! I love being normal! Anyhow, on the van ride to JFK, I met a few interesting people. One was a girl from Denmark, who apparently was backpacking through South and North America, and was now on her way home. How cool I though, we go to Europe to backpack, they come to the Americas. The other person I met was a girl who was a Canadian that was at some conference at the UN and was now going home; apparently she also plays the Celtic Harp. Go figure. Next, was the flight from JFK to Detroit only a few hours, which was the shortest of all my flights. It was good warm up to the 13 hr flight that awaits me. I made it to Tokyo the 12 hr plane ride, plus 45 min quarantine by the Japan govt to make sure no one has swine flu i guess. I dont have much time left, but i want to tell you i am safe and love you very much. i hope grad was fun for you all. I'll email when i get to Korea

Day 3:

So last night, I got a call from the agency in Korea, due to some miscommunications my flight got delayed until sat morning instead. It was rather inconvenient, but not entirely bad. In my attempt to make some lemonade from lemons I visited the city. I went to Museum of Natural History. I took lots of pics (there all on facebook). I saw many interesting exhibits like planets, dinosaurs and other animals. After that I took the subway to the Rockefeller Center. I saw the famous ice skating ring and statue, which apparently serves as a fancy restaurant in the summer. Following that I decided to head to statue of liberty. I got on the fairy and went Stanton Island; seeing the famous green French lady in the process. After a long day of sightseeing and train travel I came back to my room, packed, and am now ready for this new stage in my life..Korea!
